My Met Update and Praise of Dr. Glueck I originally posted this under "Recommend a Doctor", but I thought the met info was appropriate for this topic, as well.
I, too, would like to recommend Dr. Glueck in Cincinnati. I wish I would have gotten to him sooner! Until now, I have been seeing a Reproductive Endo.
My diagnosis came in 2003 after I read an article and heavily pursued it. While I appreciate the RE I ended up seeing in Indy who did some tests and prescribed met, I do not appreciate the "ttc" focus of every appointment with her. I realize my clock is ticking; however, PCOS affects us in so many ways aside from infertility. My main concern with PCOS has always been the weight issues. I have have low-carbed for 6 years now, and while I did lose a lot of weight in 2000 prior to diagnosis, I have steadily gained weight despite being VERY strict and despite taking met. It was so comforting to hear Dr. Glueck tell me today that we "can fix this." He spent quite a bit of time explaining the PCOS/IR cycle and how met assists. Even though I've done so much research on it myself over the years, it was so refreshing for him to take the time to address my SPECIFIC needs. His studies fascinate me, and I really do feel honored to participate. I know his work will continue to assist others, and I'm glad to be a small part of it!
I am still shocked at the extensive labwork he performs for his PCOS patients. My RE didn't even check my blood at my annual exam in January, and I've been taking met for over 2 years. How on earth can she assess if the met is actually working? I suspect she isn't as concerned because AF HAS been regulated, even though I stressed rather emphatically my concerns over the unexplained weight gain. Today, for the first time since receiving my PCOS diagnosis, I felt HEARD, and I guess I just wanted to share that with all of you. Dr. Glueck immediately increased my Fortamet dosage (2500 mg from 2000 mg), and it will be a staggered dosage as opposed to all at once like the Fortamet ER is taken now. He also gave me two other alternatives if this doesn't work, so I am very hopeful that we will see some improvement at my next appt in 60 days.
I would HIGHLY recommend doing whatever it takes to AT LEAST consult with Dr. Glueck. I emailed him with my concerns before I booked an appointment, and I was astounded at his prompt reply. I'm lucky to only be 90 minutes away. He really knows this stuff. I only wish I would have found him 20 years ago.
