Question My Mother, Need Help

Hi Ladies, this isn't about me...although I've had depression in the past.

My Mother has depression, OCD, fibromyalgia, arthritis, etc etc. She's 59 years old and lives with my sister.

I'll say it now, my mom has always been 'off', before taking Prozac she was physically and verbally abusive, she'd throw things, she flew off the handle and cursed non-stop.

She's had the unfortunate event of being on low-income health insurance and finds these doctors who she goes to and says "I have _____" and they throw bottles of pills at her. Basically anything she asks for, they give.

I call her the walking medicine cabinet, at any given time she has a "pain" pill, a "stomach" pill, a "sleeping" pill, etc in her purse. She doesn't really separate what kind of pain with the pill and generalizes it.

Recently her memory has gotten bad and every time I call her she is slurring and totally incoherent having taken a "sleeping" pill.

My mom and I went to Disneyland and she told me she thought of killing herself by taking pills and giving them to her dog too. I don't think she's completely without thought because she said "but I thought, what the heck was I thinking...why would I kill the dog?!"

My sister, who she lives with, has also been prone to depression and psychotic behavior...she scared me to death once by trying to hit me and proceeded to repeatedly punch the fridge until she was bleeding. She was anti-psychotics and other pills, just like my mom.

So these 2 women with serious issues live together and make each other insane...my sister calls and says she thinks mom is not ok and she is looking into "homes" for her.

She explained my mom's doctor wants my mom to go in for a Psych Evaluation (or rather, making her). She also said my mom was taking 2 anti-depressants and some pill that makes her sleepy, then she's awake all night and ends up taking a sleeping pill to rest soundly. She takes pain pills for her body pain from her other conditions.

So the story goes my mom flies off the handle because some new doctor took her off Prozac and changed her meds all around which makes my sister unable to deal with her and proceeds to punch holes in the wall.

My mom's account is the same thing, but says its her fault because she cannot control her temp "without the medication'.

My mom wants to move to some assisted living in Washington because she doesn't want to be a burden, my sister wants to control my mom's every move and everything she eats and I just want to know what the heck to do with this problem.

I asked my mom if she'd detox and start over and see which meds she REALLY needs, she insists she cannot go without Prozac and is taking some pill called Lyrica.

I think she is depressed and probably more often than not mistreated by my sister, but she is rolling over and giving up and letting her put her into a home.

Has anyone had a situation where you or someone you know was so depressed, suicidal and on so many medications they wanted to put you into a home or have care provided for you?

I honestly can't determine whose side of the situation is accurate and if her issue is mental or physical.

My sister asked me to sit in on the psych evaluation, but I said I thought my mom may be dishonest or hide things with me there.

Any advice would be helpful!

Chrystal, I have not read your whole post. However, I have a similar situation with my mother and sister. Please IM me. I can be reached at yahoo or AIM. I can tell you exactly what I went through and what I had to do to be sure my mother was safe in her own hands.
Depression along with any other complications can turn any person into someone you will no longer recognize me.

Call the department of the aging in the state your mom is in--they are usually a good starting place for resources for these sorts of tough problems.

Have your mom or sister ever been evaluated for bipolar--the depression combined with rage sounds a lot like bipolar 1, and there is a very good mood stabilizer for rage related to bipolar (thank God my mom is finally on it.)
