Hey,
My names Amanda And I'm new here. Im 18 and am currently at Otago University. I was diagnosed with Pcos when I was 13 and wasn't told much except to exercise and eat hardly anything. I was put on the pill and like both my mother and sister, put on a heap of weight, (even though the doctor said the pill doesn't do that). Now a few years later I weigh even more and I have realised that if noone is going to tell me about this condition then I will just have to find out myself. In the process I came across this website which is a bonus. I now know that the best thing I can do for myself is to lose some weight, so thats the focus of next semester.
Anyway, I thought getting to know the other kiwis on here would be good for me as knowledge and therefore, support for pcos is hard to come by.
Hey - I'm also in Dunedin studying. Student health is/was running a healthy lifestyle thing for those of us who are 'obese'. You get 5 appointments with a nurse to discuss your current lifestyle and what you can be doing about it ($10) and a free refferal to a nutritionist and an exercise physio. I haven't seen the nutritionist, but the exercise physio has been FANTASTIC. I've seen him a few times now and its only $10each for your 2nd, 3rd etc appt. If you're interested, just call up reception and book a nurse appt and make sure you mention the 'healthy lifestyle' bit. From memory its a 1/2 hour appt. The nurse I saw gave me great lunch ideas (which is where I was struggling) and it was great motivation for me to get healthy before the next appt if nothing else!

Finished my BSc (Nutrition),
Almost finished BCom (Economics)
I am in Auckland studying health, Do check out things on here and remember BCP is no always the way to go. There have been studies that link the BCP to further insulin resistence and all it does is cover up the symptoms of pcos.
What kind of diet do you stick to? Have you have an Insulin resistance test? Do you do much exercise?
I have been working to sort out my weight and stuff so if you want someone to chat to and bounce ideas off of and get support I am more than happy to help :O)
