Unhappy My scalp is driving me crazy!

Hello Cysters!

One of my symptoms of PCOS is a horrible dry scalp/dandruff and oily/greasy hair (closest to scalp).

I've had dandruff, for I don't even know how long. I've tried using "Head and Shoulders" but that did nothing productive to my scalp--except make it even MORE oily.

So if there's any way I can at least make it more bearable, so I'm not scratching it all the time and finding it all over my shoulders?
Also how is it possible to have a dry scalp and oily hair/scalp to begin with? (That doesn't make sense to me)

Thank you for your time!

I know how you feel! My scalp gets so itchy and flaky. In my pre-teens I used to be able to wear black shirts with no problem but now I feel so embarrassed by the dandruff and Head and Shoulders didn't seem strong enough to get rid of it for me.

What I've started to do is use Selsun Blue twice a week and use my normal shampoo the rest of the time and it seems to be helping. I find that with Selsun Blue it is still a little bit itchy but it is not nearly as flaky as usual. You can also get Selsun Blue Naturals and Selsun Blue for Normal to Oily hair.

I have itchy scalp and dandruff and have since teenage. I've tried absolutely everything and am afraid I've never resolved it. Sorry I hate it. But I don't have oily hair at all (it's very dry all over)

I also have itchy scalp and oily scalp. It does not make any sense at all I know. My husband has really bad dry scalp with a lot of dandruff and my hair dresser told me to get seabreeze and dab it on his scalp. I haven't been able to find it in stores so I haven't tried it yet. He does use a shampoo made by Paul Mitchell called Tea Tree that seems to help him out somewhat. Also, I know that your scalp is already oily, but have you tried using a hot oil treatment? It may help? Hope you can get some relief very soon!

Oh i'm sorry! I have somewhat itchy scalp and oily scalp if I do not wash my hair daily, but not as severe as yours sounds. My husband has very dry scalp and a lot of dandruff and he has gotten some relief by using a shampoo by Paul Mitchell called Tea Tree. It kind of tingles and smells like mint. I have used it before and really like it. You may give that a try. You can find it at any professional salon..you could most likely find it on Amazon or Ebay as well.

I haven't tried Selsun Blue before, I think I will now! Especially if they have natural selection now. Thank you!

Sea Breeze?! I use that, it's a face cleaner(Astringent). I found it at Meijer (similar to Walmart), and I think Walmart. It might also depend on where you live and who carries what.

There's a store near my house that has Paul Mitchell generics, I hope they have the Tea Tree I might give that a try! Thanks!

My aunt was a hairdresser in southern CA for 15 years. I grew up with seabreeze on my head, she swears by it! It does help a lot but it also burns if you have any scratches on your head. You should be able to get it in the astrigent section of any store.

Have you tried a shampoo with tea tree oil? I used tea tree essential oil once and it did seem to help. I read online you can a I think 10 drops oil to 8 oz shampoo. You might want to look that up to be sure.

I had a similar problem. Go to a dermatologist. You may have a skin problem like psoriasis or seborrheac dermatitis. They can help you find a solution.

Yes, that is what my Stylist told me to get for my husbands dry scalp and dandruff. I haven't been able to find the stuff, but I will probably look online for it. He loves the tea tree shampoo, and i'm sure generic will be just fine. Give it a try. I hope it help's ya!

Along the same lines as the Seabreeze would be Listerine. Seriously!! Google "Listerine and dandruff!"

You might try Nioxin or Nizoral as both help with dandruff.

Some report that it seemed to help their hair thinning fight effects of DHT on the scalp as well.

I have had this problem for YEARS! I hate it! I have tried for years to do something about it. Tried soo many different products went to the docs for it ect. Recently I went to a hairdresser that i am sticking with she is great! She does a deep condition once a month on my head with a massage and then i use a shampoo/conditioner combo called Thermafuse the dandruff one. It's been working great for me so far and its been over a month since i had my deep conditioning.. It hasnt gotten rid of it completely but let me tell you i wear black shirts with a little more confidence then i did before

Talking Itchy/productive scalp, also Nioxin

I wash every day with Biolage for colored hair and use the conditioner and let the conditioner get on my scalp. This lessens greatly the thick coating of scalp I seem to have.
The Nioxin removes testosterone from the outer layer of cells so that hair can grow if you have male pattern balding/or thinning of your hair. I use it twice a week now that I got started (it took daily use for about two weeks in order to get started. Only use about 3 drops worth on the thin spots to save $. Makes a big difference.
Also do not get Nioxin on your face. I used to think it would help limit hirsutism. But what it did was cause hormonal ups and downs in my skin. that made me break out with painful acne just like a teenager. Ouch.
