My Son.....(dedicated to military parents) MY SON
by (edited to remove name for privacy)
January 29, 2005
(Dedicated to my cousin Aaron Cooper and my aunt and uncle Sue and Greg Cooper and to all the other sons, daughters and parents who are serving and sacrificing for our country and our world.)

I look at his innocent face and it's hard to believe.
That unconditional love could allow us to conceive.
Your small fingers reach out and take hold of my hand.
It's hard to imagine one day you will grow up to be a man.
Before I realized you are taking your first steps.
I know it's silly but I both smiled and I wept.
Your first word, first smile, first triumph and fear,
No matter what you face my son, I will always be here.
Just a matter of moments and suddenly it's graduation day.
Eighteen years have come and just as quickly slipped away.
My instinct wants to keep you young and always protect you.
But life doesn't work that way; to your convictions be true.
So now I sit and think and pray for the man that is my son.
I'm proud of you and yet I'm sad; I know I'm not the only one.
All across the land are parents just like your dad and me.
Who think of their brave children serving on land and at sea.
Our Heavenly Father understands the separation that I feel.
He sent His only Son so that from sin the world would heal.
Jesus had a mom and dad who loved him like no other.
He had a special bond like us; that of loving son and nurturing mother.
My son I think of you from the moment I wake 'til I fall asleep.
And just like when you were younger, I both smile and I weep.
For across the miles a young solider works hard and will never cease.
Until the day the world unites to find happiness, love, and peace.

I'm gonna stop looking back and starting moving on
And learn how to face my fears
Love with all of my heart, make my mark
I wanna leave something here
Go out on a ledge, without any net
That's what I'm gonna be about
Yeah, I wanna be running
When the sand runs out
