I just registered today and I thought I should begin by posting my own story of how I got here. I'll start at the very beginning...
I had my first period when I was 9 years old. My cousin who is six months older than me got hers exactly six months before I got mine, and she told me I'd have it within those six months. She was right, so I was prepared for it! Unfortunately it went from being something I was ready for to something I was NOT ready for. I was bleeding heavily with lots of blood clots, and I bled for 50 days.
My doctor prescribed some type of a drug that was supposed to be like a D&C without actually having to have a D&C. It "cleared me out" and we thought it was a fresh start. I had normal periods for a little while.
It gradually slowed and slowed... 7 day periods... 5 day periods... 3 day periods... 2 day periods... 1 day periods... no periods. By age 14 I was only having two or three periods per year, and they were only 2 days or so in length. By age 18 my periods were pretty much gone.
I did have three periods in 2005, after losing 40 pounds. I didn't make that connection until just now. Two of those periods were normal and one month apart just as they should be. The third was a few months later, extremely heavy, and it lasted several weeks. I ended up taking holistic remedies like blue cohosh which helped with the pain and then after a while my period stopped. That was the last I've seen of Aunt Flow--back in October 2005.
My doctor says that she thinks I have PCOS, but she wants me to get some insurance before we can do anything about it. I'm having financial problems at the moment, so it's an impossibility. I have my own business but I never feel good enough to take on enough work, so it's a never ending cycle. I am tired of waiting for that perfect day. I want to get healthy NOW, and I don't think I need a doctor to do that.
I really want to get the weight off (I am currently about 250 pounds). I feel that if I could just stick to a diet that is low in refined carbs and exercise every day, I could get all the weight off and be healthy again. I want to do it on my own, and THEN go to the doctor and have them check to make sure that everything is actually OK. I don't want to get there with drugs. I've watched my whole family take these prescription drugs and get sicker and sicker and sicker... I have no interest in that.
So that's where I am today. Starting over again, trying to get healthy. I'm sure many of you are in the same boat. I'm glad to know you, and glad to have this place of support. Looking forward to getting to know all of you!
Try the alternative treatments forum, there might be some good information for you there.
It's great that you want to lose weight and manage your symptoms on your own, but also keep in mind that PCOS puts us at risk for a lot of more serious problems that can require medications and should never be left untreated!
Otherwise, welcome to SC!

I know there are cysters that are not on any meds and are using alternative remedies to treat their PCOS. But please keep an open mind, there are some of us that found it impossible to lose weight without meds for IR and then some cysters are thin, so just losing the weight will not necessarly control your PCOS.
Here is a link to the alternative Forum. http://www.soulcysters.net/alternative-remedies/
Hope you that helps! Best wishes.

I thought I could do it without drugs for years. Now I'm sitting at a sweet 236 lbs, on more drugs for pain, and heartburn, and insomnia, then ever before, and still trying to lose the weight, but to no avail. I think it's really okay if you need the help of medication- even if it's "just" to get you on your way. Imagine someone who has heart problems or something equally life threatening and wants to make a go of it by themselves. I'm not saying it can't be done, but I also personally think it's okay if you get help with medication. (It DOES help to have insurance, for sure!)
That said, I'm personally going to try a low glycemic index diet, such as South Beach, or the equivalent!
