My new wig arrived yesterday - I am just awaiting my consignment of wig care products and wig caps. I am going to book an appointment to have my hair stylist thin out the crown section as it looks a bit "big" and "wiggy". Otherwise, it's great... the colour is really nice. It's the first time in my life I have been able to have my part on the left side as I have a cowlick which means I have to part my hair on the right side. Fun...
Anyway, my dad nearly wet himself from laughing when he first saw it and at first I was really p!ssed about that, until I looked at it from his point of view... it looked so funny and macabre lying in it's box... like a dead person's scalp had been sent to me in the post. I have learnt to try and have a sense of humour where hairloss is concerned or else I just spend the whole time feeling depressed and crying.
This whole wig thing is a tester - I will try it out and see how I feel. If I don't like it then I will look into other cosmetic options. It felt great to have hair and be able to brush and feel it when I tried it on yesterday. I couldn't stop staring at myself! You forget how used to having a few straggly locks you are and how in a funny way, I kinda accept it even though I don't like it.

I did the same thing....I bought a wig just to test it out...I ended up not liking it. I bet if I had gone to a hairdresser and had it cut and styled I would have liked it better...I hope you like it! I've heard it can be a great esteem booster.
Oh and don't worry...My DH had the same reaction when he saw the wig I bought...He said it looked like I had a dead animal in a box in the bathroom
Let us know how it goes! We would love to see pictures once it's done.

Well it is TOO much hair - like wow, who the hell actually has this much hair? I don't think anyone does... but then I hardly have any hair - so obviously I am going to look extremely weird... it just really needs thinning out. I read on one wig website that most customers find they do have to have their synthetic wig thinned at the salon - which made me feel less like a freak.
I think I have gotten used to having literally like this thin sheet of stuff stuck to my head and when I touch my head you can just feel my scalp. I have some kinda rats tails going on from mid-way down the back of my head, which touch my shoulders at the back and feel horrible. Nothing can truly be worse than the way that feels and looks.
The other thing I need to remember is that so many women wear wigs - just for fun or change of hairstyle... so why should I feel bad or freaky? There's probably some men who would pay for the privilege of a woman in a wig - LMAO! I imagine that everyone could tell it was a wig - but that's because I am obsessed with hair and looking at people's heads. I also used to be part of the Jewish community and so I am used to being able to tell if a lady is wearing a wig (sheitel) or not. However, most people don't really take in that much information when looking at you so they won't know and even if they do: why should I care? It's like they look at my scalp already so if they look at me because I am wearing a wig - which is worse?
Kristina - it seriously looks like a dead rat came and laid down in a box covered in a piece of netting (the hairnet) - once you hold it up it looks less like that. I said to my dad - hey, if you are not careful I will buy you a toupee for your bald patch. I mean this is the guy who said to me when he saw the top of my head on webcam: "Oh, look we have matching bald patches" - GEE, thanks dad that really makes me feel good.
My mum is going to call our hair stylist and get an appointment for me to get it styled - hopefully for Monday. I am too embarrassed to call. My stylist knows ALL about my lack of hair and she is very nice about it - I feel comfortable with her, but I feel this is different... like one more step and I know I will feel very weird getting this styled and thinned in front of people, but I have to try and see... if I don't I will never know.

I probably wouldn't know if someone was wearing a wig or not (unless it looked REALLY fake, like totally unnatural color or curl) but I can really tell when I see people without hair or thinning hair...mine's going too so I tend to look at others' scalps a lot. I'd rather people think anything besides "that lady's bald." I may end up in a wig in future, too, if they can't perfect that hair cloning thing.

Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.
You do know about the Wig Support web site at MSN, don't you? You have to join, you will learn so much. It is a life saver for wig wearing and styling, and buying, and emotional support! And we share pics and recommendations. You have to ask the moderator to join, but I'm sure she will let you, and just tell her "Bammie" sent you. That's my name over there
And yes, when you go from thin crappy PCOS hair to a wig, it seems like way too damn much hair, and you will feel freaky. Sometimes it IS too much hair, but wigs are meant to be personalized and styled, and can be thinned by someone who knows how! Or, maybe they AREN"T too much hair, and you will get used to it!
Warning on getting it styled. Cutting and thinning wigs is different than human hair attached to your head. You want to ask the stylist is doing wigs is something she has experience with. Remember, once it's cut off, it doesn't grow back!

I have just joined WigSupport - like on Friday, but I haven't posted anything yet. Just been reading and looking at the pics for inspiration. I have to go to work in a minute, but I think I will post something on there tomorrow (once I get my tax return done... I keep procrastinating and spending ages online instead of doing it )
I am going to speak to my stylist and see if she has dealt with a wig before - I know that a lot of the girls I have had my haircut by in the past have learnt to cut hair on wigs - so we will see. I bought Noriko - Tiara in Toasted Brown I think it was.. I can't even remember now!! I wanted to try it and see how I felt - then if I really got into wigs I would probably go for something more expensive. The only thing that I don't like about it (aside from it being a bit "big") is the fact that because I am only 5'3 I feel like the length of it on the back is too long... so I guess I will get it shortened a little. I was reading a website (recommended on WigSupport) that was detailing how to thin the wig and stuff like that. I don't think I would want to do it myself though.
I do agree that part of the reason it looks and feels a bit funny is because I barely have any hair... so anything with more hair than I have would look and feel strange... to my and everyone else!

Oooooooh, I tried Tiara!!! Luscious style! She didn't suit my face (sob!) but she's a lovely wig. And, you'll be happy to hear, yes, she DOES have a lot of hair and if your stylist is careful, she will thin nicely. Not an overly HUGE amount of hair, but she has a lot of volume, and you've got room to work with her. And yes, I can see that in Tiara, you'll feel like, "Holy cow, this is way more hair than I ever had!"
I tried Chestnut, which is really similar to Bronze Brown. Both gorgeous colors. Norikos are very good reasonably priced synthetic wigs. The first full wig I wore was Noriko Clair. Take a look at that style. It's fun!
Wig length...you will learn this... the pics on the internet and on wig catalogs are on gals with REALLY long necks, so the proportion might be different on real people. As a short fat person, with a short fat neck, they are always long on me.
I posted some pics the other day of some I've been trying. It's on the first page of "Members Albums." My name over there is Bammie. I'm about to switch for the fall to one by Amore called Victoria.
