Well, I haven't been counting carbs or calories or GI or anything, but I have been trying to eat sensibly. I have a stapled stomach, so I can't eat a lot -- as far as quantity -- and I have been trying to be sure that what I do eat is somewhat healty. I started concentrating on this in just the last two weeks.
Now, today, I found that I've gained six pounds in the last eight days. Three of those pounds were just in the last two days!!! I have to say that I'm mystified, and worried as well, as to why this is happening.
On top of this, I've been urinating like crazy the last three or four days. I mean like getting up six times in the night to go a large amount. I don't drink a great deal -- probably only 40 ounces a day or less. My legs are already full of fluid, and have been for a while. But whenever I try to drink more, I bloat up terribly all over. Right now, it honestly feels like I'm putting out more than I'm taking in.
I started taking Tricor just over a week ago, and about two weeks ago my endo upped my Metformin from 1000 to 1500. I'm currently on my 10-day cycle of Provera. DH heard that Metformin causes water retention in the first couple of months, but I've been on it since March. And, I do have a lot of water in my legs, but that's not new. Even if it is all water weight gain, six pounds in eight days has got to be hard on the heart.
I called my PCP's office and talked to his nurse today. She was going to talk to him and call me back tomorrow.
Part of what worries me is that every time I've tried to diet in the past, I've had serious health problems as a result. I posted elsewhere here on my diet phobia. Now, it seems that even just eating sensibly is causing me trouble!
I guess I'll just wait and see what the doctor says.
Thanks. I talked to my endo, and her first concern was what my blood sugar was. I checked it, and it was fine. So I will be going in to see her in the morning, to see what she can figure out. She did say it might be the Provera that's causing the weight gain. (Although that's never happened before, but I haven't taken exactly this combination of drugs before, either.)
I went to see my endo on Friday, and she was also concerned that I had gained about 12 pounds (according to the office scale) since I had last been there a couple of weeks ago. At that time, she felt like it was water weight gain due to the Metformin and the Provera. She took blood and urine samples, and had me come back today.
Today, it seems that the tests came out ok. She was concerned about the osmolality of the urine -- apparently if it was too thin I could have moved into diabetes inspidus. So that's not the problem. The blood test was borderline for thyroid problems, but she said those readings could be due to other factors. So, she's going to do another thyroid test in about a month to see if there's any change. But she still thinks that this is water weight gain caused by the Provera. She did give me a prescription for Lasix that I'm to take only until I start my next period. After that, I'm to stop taking the Provera altogether and see if the Metformin alone will regulate my periods.
So, it's still a matter of waiting to see what happens. But, I do feel better about it all.
