The OPP moved in today, finally, after a couple months of natives occupying a development. They had a court order to move the natives out, but didn't do it. It wasn't until they were threatened with a lawsuit and the charge of being in contempt of court that they finally did their jobs. I hate it when police decide when and if to apply the law rather than just enforcing it. Those decisions are not theirs to make.
So now the protesters are back and setting fire to tires and leaving some area residents scared. It doesn't look like this can end well.

They've claimed some land (which is already under develpment) as theirs, even though it's been in the hands of a developer for a long time and was the property of the government for ages before that.

I have to admit I haven't been paying very much attention either to this specific case. I'm so tired of the local news as of late, especially with those 8 men found outside of ST. Thomas. I really don't care much to turn the television on, or pick up a paper.
I will say, however, that I partly blame the Government for taking so long to settle these numerous land-claims. I don't necessarily blame the Native people for getting so fed up, but I don't support violent reactions, obviously. Maybe they feel that is the only way they will be heard, since the red tape is never ending.

The thing is, this one was settled. Long ago the land was given to the government for the construction of a highway or bridge or something. This is just a renegade band of natives (not even the official Six Nations council) that is claiming this land.
It bugs me that anyone can break the law and get away with it for this long. And that the police can shirk their responsibilities to uphold that law and pick and choose what and when they enforce.

And last night the police prevented the citizens of the town from reopening the highway (main road in and the only route for large trucks like gas tankers), and protected the "rights" of those breaking the law! My blood boils just thinking about it!

Ajani, I've seen some of this on the news and I agree with you totally! I think that the law should apply to everyone regardless of what the situation is. The is nonsense, IMO.
Looks like the situation deteriorated over the weekend. All of the fighting - it's so sad to watch on the news. I'm glad that I am not in charge of trying to mediate the situation...I have no clue how they will get a handle on it.
I hope that nobody gets seriously injured - from what I saw on the news, it looked like it could really get out of hand pretty fast. Tempers flaring on both sides of the fight, and police in riot gear...not good a combination.
It's a disaster. And I tend to agree with what one person on the news said about the Natives cutting the hydro; it could be counted as an act of terrorism. It certainly would warrant a huge investigation and manhunt to find out who did it, were it anyone else. But all the OPP are doing is escorting Hydro One personel onto the property to fix it.

There is always two sides to every story and although you may or may not agree with what is going on with the native protest I have been asked to close this post since it seems to be a sensitive subject for some.
I hope you understand my reasons & feel free to message me to address any of your concerns about this post or any future posts in the Canadian forum.
