Question Natural alternative to metformin

Hi! I've taken metformin for years now; and, only last week did I realize that I am probably damaging my already sluggish liver by drinking wine/liquor with it almost daily. So, rather than being responsible by discontinuing drinking, I decided to discontinue metformin in favor of a natural alternative. (I was taking 1000 mg metformin daily, by the way.)

I read about inositol and cinnamon from other threads and the sticky. But, I haven't seen chromium mentioned anywhere. Have any of you been able to improve your insulin sensitivity (to encourage ovulation) with chromium supplementation either similarly or even better than with metformin?

Oops! Just found this within the sticky regarding magnesium and IR. Kind of answers my own question:

Quote:
4) Additionally, magnesium (1,000 mg per day), chromium, and vanadium are involved directly in regulation of the levels of insulin and the cellular response to insulin. Dr. Julian Whitaker recommends 400 mcg of chromium pico-linate daily, and 30 mg of vanadium daily for insulin resistance related to overweight. As always, discuss these recommendations with a nutritionally-aware health professional. (Dr. James Balch, author of Prescription for Nutritional Healing, points out that chromium picolinate is so effective at improving insulin sensitivity that individuals with diabetes should check with a nutritionally-aware physician before using it, as it may necessitate a change in their medication ).

I definitely say take Cinnamon (1-2 capsules per meal--depending on the amount of sugar/white carbs you eat), and Chromium picolinate. I don't have any experience with the magnesium or inositol, however, I'd def be willing to try it as a natural alternative to Metformin...I too worry alot about my liver, even though I don't really drink, all the meds and stuff have to be hard on it!
