I have recently discovered that I have PCOS. I would like to get pregnant this year, but I haven't had a period since August 2007. I have been to see a fertility specialist, who has recommended that I start Puregon injections. He didn't even discuss Clomid because he said Puregon was more effective.
I haven't really tried diet, naturopathy or any alternative methods of balance my hormones, do you think I should be trying this first before I start injecting my body with Puregon?
As you can see I'm new to all of this and I could really handle some advice. I've also just had an xray and it said that I might have submucosal fibroids and therefore now I'm thinking that I should just try and get pregnant asap before they get any bigger and then affect my chances down the track.
Any advice at all and your comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much for the speedy reply. I've read the information you sent through. Basically it seems to say that Puregon can definitely be successful but perhaps I should try a lower dose first. In all literature it says that you should try Clomid (think that's what it's called) first and then if that isn't successful, you should move on to the injections. I'm just wondering why the doctor isn't suggesting that. I'm seeing him again on Tuesday so I will definitely ask the question.
I don't really understand what Metformin is? Is anyone able to explain?
My BMI is 28 so I am overweight, what are everyone's thoughts about whether I should try and lose weight first (which is proving very hard, even though I'm running every other day) to see if my cycle comes back naturally, or whether I should just kick on with the ovulation induction program?
Thanks again for everyone's help - this site is fantastic, I'm so happy I found it!
I think you're off to a good start here. Do some research here, online, or in books, and get some questions ready to take with you for your appt on tues.
metaforim is for insulin resistance (most PCOSers have this, it is related to weight gain and difficulty losing weight)
Losing weight is good to do, but may take longer than you want ot wait.
I chose to try losing weight, and TTC (I'm not really losing anything anyways, except maybe a pound every three weeks, blah)
I wanted to wish you luck with everything.

I always try to go natural if at all possible. Most doctors just want to prescribe medicine that will mask the symptoms but not actually heal your body.
When I was trying to get pregnant with my son I went and had all kinds of tests, they put me on clomid (which did nothing for me) and then I ended up having a lapraoscopy and they found some endometriosis. After the surgery I took a break as I was tired of getting poked and prodded all of the time and a year later I got pregnant out of the blue - don't ask me what was so special about that month? I tried for 4 years and finally got pregnant my son is 10 now and I've never gotten pregnant since.
If I had known about the herbal remedies of today and the information about PCOS I would never had gone through all of that. I am going to try the Insulite Laboratories PCOS program and see if that helps - at least it is all natural. My doctor just wanted to stick me on the Yaz bc pill.
Just a note: after I had my son I ended up having the PCOS symptoms - facial hair, more acne, weight gain, tired a alot, lower sex drive, etc.... before I had him I didn't have all of that just a hard time getting pregnant. I have always had my period like clockwork so I didn't think anything was ever wrong boy was I wrong. Another funny thing is I used to have really straight hair after I had my son it turned curly and has been ever since!
I think these are good questions for your doctor. It may depend upon other factors, such as the fibroids, and how much you do want to become pregnant. Since pregnancy was not an issue for me, I have worked my butt off to lose weight and it has definitely helped my symptoms. I don't know of a reason why you couldn't work on weight loss while doing the fertility treatments too. But that's probably a question for the Doctor. Don't let them force you into something that you're not comfortable with.
