Dr. Thys-Jacobs is an endocrinologist specializing in PCOS, and does research into the underlying causes of the condition, very interesting, promising stuff. Personally, I think she's a genius–I'm off meds and have had a regular cycle for 6 months, and she's only been treating me for a year and few months. She's at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital. 212.506.0246

Hi, I'm considering seeing Dr. Susan but wondering what others have experienced with her since I'm seeing more about her PMS-Calcium research than expertise on PCOS from googling. Did you go off all meds completely? Did she just put you on her calcium meds regime? Any other insights?
I have been going to her for around 2 years. It varies as to what she will put you on. When I first went to her hair was thinning I had put on an extreme amt of weight, and most of my levels were really low. We spent the first year just getting everything normalized and ruling out what I don't have So treating my really low Vit D levels E.g. some of her patients have a sensitivity to wheat we tried that I didn't lose anything . I was taking calcium which does help moods etc but my Vit D levels were still really low so now I take Premcal (which she developed)., Synthroid for my thyroid, and Met, and an iron supplement. I get my period every month and have done so for close to 2 yrs (I never had a regular pd prior), I stopped gaining weight and am working on losing it, hair has stopped thining and I have a lot more energy

That's great that you've found a caring physician and one thats good! Congrats!
I'd also like to say that I recently went to see Dr. Walter Futterweit and he's an amazing Endocrinologist. He's been researching PCOS for 25 years and is a genuinely caring physician -- he spent 2 hours with me virtually looking thoroughly through my scalp and skin and every inch of my body and asking for all the right tests to be able to diagnose me properly.
You can find his contact info online. He's in NYC.
I see this thread's been inactive for awhile, but I just had to follow up on my previous post. After about two years of treatment I stopped seeing Dr. Thys regularly and have only had my levels checked yearly. Since my initial treatment, my health has continued to improve every year. I was also eventually diagnosed as gluten-intolerant with great success, it cleared up whatever symptoms were remaining from the PCOS (minor, infrequent acne and fatigue, a stubborn 10 lbs that I could never quite get rid of). I recently went to see an endocrinologist through my university's health plan to get my levels checked without having to pay through the nose for it - she was shocked that I have PCOS: except for the presentation of my ovaries on my sonogram, she said she no sign of it, all my levels are completely normal, including my insulin/blood glucose which was BELOW average (at diagnosis I was proto-diabetic). All of this was achieved through calcium, vitamin D and B supplementation and diet modification ONLY. I cut out excess sugars initially, and then wheat. I always excercised regularly, but I see the benefit of it now and have tons more energy. My genetics might dictate that I have this condition, but I'm so grateful that it doesn't have to mean a lifetime of medication and doctor's visits –*I'm essentially self-monitoring now and I have a much deeper understanding of how my body functions. Though I know the diabetic drugs are very beneficial to many of you, I'd encourage everyone to look into, and talk to their endos about alternative treatments.
Thank you so much for your update. I have been considering making an appointment with Dr. Thys. This gave me the push I need to call! Hopefully she can improve my symptoms of irregular periods and thinning hair.
