HI, I am a military spouse, so under Tricare Prime insurance...I live in Jacksonville Florida and need a doctor, preferably an Endo, that can treat my PCOS...military docs seem to think it is simply a fertility issue and see no reason to help me here, unless I am lookingto get pregnant...I didn't have this problem in other places we have been stationed.
I am taking 2000mg of Met, lots of supplements (which kept me off gemfibrozol to lower my triglycerides!! Thank God) I am 220 pounds...haven't had a period since last August and look like I am pregnant....clothes don't fit. hairis thinning, acne is doing better...but I have a uterus full of golf ball size fibroids and nearly bleed out when I do have a period and now my gall bladder is acting up,bad!! And my blood pressure is up again....sorry for the complaining, had a bad day with yet another military doc that had no idea what PCOS is, again....he was a quack....someone please HELP!!
Thanks, Tammy

Oh do I feel for you!! I just moved from Jax last October and they had some of the worst doctors I've ever come across! Are you being seen at the hospital or at Mayport clinic? I was at Mayport. But I did see a good OB/GYN at Jax (Dr. Roberts), although I really only saw him for fertility. He did seem awful nice. There was also another one there that seemed nice, but I really don't know much about him. His last name began with an M.
I saw Dr. Romine at Mayport. And while he wasn't sharpest tool in the box, he was better than any of the other docs I came across there. Luckily for me, I already had a protocol going for meds from an awesome doctor I had seen before moving to Jax and that I insisted on it being followed (I still do). I'm so upset she's not in the Navy anymore; they lost a great doctor. Anyway, Romine is pretty good, he's willing to listen at least. I mean, when I told him that I thought I might need to up my dosage of synthroid, he didn't argue with me. And my TSH was 3.53 at the time; most docs would have told me it was 'fine'. He knew that it should be lower and listened to me that I'd like to keep it under 2 because that's when I felt the best. So he gave me a new upper dose.
Did they offer to remove the fibroids for you? They should have. Have you been to OB/GYN?? They should have seen you for them.
Unfortunately, I don't know a good endo. If you were looking for a good RE, I could tell you one. He was one I had wanted to go see and it was great because he was a tricare provider, so I was able to get a referral to him.
There are others from the Jax area on this board so I'm hoping they'll be able to help you with finding an endo. I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone suffering from those docs in Jax. Really, except for CA, I have never come across such bad doctors. Maybe I just found the bad ones in both places?? Because there HAS to be good ones there somewhere.
You can also try this: go to http://hmd.humana-military.com/South/main.asp (I hope it sends you to the page I want). If you click on "Network Physician Find - by Distance" you can actually look up a few endos in the area. If it's not on the page I hope it is, look for a link that says "find a provider" or "Humana Military's provider directory".
Good luck! Let me know if I can help you out with anything!

just wondering who you saw. I did my IVF in Jax at FIRM. I liked them a lot but have since heard not so good things about them. Good luck. I did all my other OB/GYN care in Tallahasse so I can't really offer much advice to you. Sorry!

Hey, Thanks to both of you..Diane...you aren't kidding....they knew my Doc in Virginia reccomended a specific doc here, at Mayport, that she trained with and knows personally. She was the only one my old doc knew of here that had extensive experience with PCOS...her name was Dr. Rafanan....but Tricare says she is booked, so they didn't even put me with a real doctor, they put me with a Physicians Assistant!! This poor guy was sooo overwhelmed when I walked in with my records he had no idea what to do with me.....and actually had the nerve to say " are you sure you have PCOS"...I was diagnosed 12 years ago, and have been reconfirmed with every blood check...thank you! Then after looking over some of my bloodwork, he said," I see a metabolic problem here".......HELLO!!...DUH!!! HE asked why I was seeking help for my PCOS...was I trying to get pregnant? I said no, I don't want my triglycerides any higher, I don't want a full beard, the go-tee I pluck is sufficient, the skin discoloration, the blood pressure and oh yeah the 220 pounds I weigh on a 1600 calorie per day high protein diet........aaaaaaaahhhhh!! Then he says, " you do realize you are at high risk, according to your C-spot protein test for having a heart attack.....OMG!! Yeah and ........the guy ends by not doing anything for me....telling me to make a wellness appointment for a pap and a breast exam at a later date and says we can just "START AT THE BEGINNING".....I left in tears....I had a pap 6 months ago and a mamogram 7 months ago, and I am so over starting at the beginning!! I have children, with the help of some womnderful doctors....now my focus is one hundred percent on getting healthy, so I can be here for my kids...I am 35 and have a nightmarish family history of diabetes, heart disease and stroke.....all of my weight in is in my stomach, so I look pregnant...nothing fits!! I am on a ton of supplements and 2000mg of Met...I exercise, eat well, get plenty of sleep and drink lots of water.....nothing is working!! I have a uterus the size of a woman 4 months pregnant, haven't had a period in 7 months and I am full of fibroids, that no doctor seems to think are important to remove....oh yeah and my mom had a modified bi-lateral mastectomy at 23 for breast cancer....and a hysterectomy at 24 for pre-cancerous fibroids and cells through out her uterus.....she survived and is alive, well and healthy, thank God........so I have history, I am diagnosed and no doc seems to think I am worth taking the time to help.....sorry for venting, I am just sickened by all of this...and what happened to the hypocratic oath anyway??
