Default Need Help, ABQ Recommendations, Questions!

I show many of the symptoms of PCOS (ie. no periods, acne, excess hair). I went to my OB a few weeks ago for my yearly appointment and to figure out what was going on with my body. He ordered a series of bloodwork and an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed my ovaries as being poly-cystic, however my doctor said all by bloodwork came back normal and doesn't have the faintest clue why I'm not menstrating. When I mentioned if PCOS was a possibility, he blew it off on the basis that I'm not overweight. He suggested seeing a Reproductive Endo or just waiting till we wanted to get pregnant again and try Clomid and see what happens. (I've gotten pregnant twice on Clomid). I'm trying to get my head around this - I would really like to know why I'm poly-cystic and am looking to get a second opinion. And I just don't feel like I got the best care and advice from him.

I live in Albuquerque, NM and was wondering if there is anyone from this area that would suggest an OB and/or Endo that is familiar with PCOS. Also, anyone else have this same situation? If it's not PCOS, any suggestions why I have those specific symptons?

THANK YOU!!
Stephanie

How long have you not had a period? Is your doctor not concerned about that? what things were tested exactly by the bloodwork? do you know?

I think that sometimes people have excess hair just because of genetics and not necessarily because of a hormone problem such as PCOS. My sister has never been dx with PCOS, but she did tell me that after having a baby she had hair growing in places where she never had it before. I never followed up on that, as far as is the extra hair still there or did it subside after the pregnancy?

PCOS somewhat of a mystery. I was dx with it, and yet never has anyone seen cysts on my ovaries. But my bloodwork showed that my prolactin was too high, so the categorized me as pcos. Who knows. There are "thin cysters" so you might let your doctor know that overweight isn't always the main factor in pcos. A reproductive endocrinologist might be more agressive at tracking down your symptoms than an ob-gyn. It might be worth finding one. I'm not in NM, so I can't help you there. I'm in NY.

I don't know if any of this helps you. I"m just kind of thinking out loud based on the information you gave.

Bloodwork doesn't tell the whole story. HALF of all cysters are not overweight. Your doctor doesn't know what he is talking about it seems.

I'm from Albuquerque. I really recommend seeing Dr. Thompson, he's a reproductive endo. I had not even thought of PCOS before seeing him for TTC, even though I have the classic symptoms (never a spontaneous period, facial hair.) He did bloodwork and ultrasound. Once he saw the "string of pearls" i.e. cysts on my ovaries, he didn't even bother with looking at b/w to diagnose me. I started cycling on 2000mg metformin, though I was really sceptical about using a diabetes drug to TTC.

Dr. Thompson also works with Dr. Caperton and I've had both doctors, they're very friendly, helpful and knowledgable.

Thank you, Andrea!

Since I posted that post, I sought out a Endo and found Dr. Caperton. He did an ultrasound and immediately diagnosed me with PCOS. I started on Metformin. I have been impressed with him and his office. I am very impressed that he actually took the time to sit down and listen to me and work with me about my diagnosis and medications.

BTW - did you know their fertility clinic is rated in the top 10 in the US?

Hey, I'm in ABQ too! Your post caught my attention

I never did see Dr. Caperton or Dr. Thompson, but I did have an appt set up with them a while back. I already knew I had PCOS but was having trouble conceiving so I was going to them for help. Turns out I got a BFP while waiting for my appt, so I never did need to see them.

I'm glad you found someone to help you! Let us know how it goes!

I love their office staff too. I'm glad you found the right doctor and information for you. Since you've started met, I really recommend sticking close to the low-carb diet they recommend. Titrating up after 1000mg was horrific and took a few weeks to settle down. There's tons of great info on the boards about met, and definitely read them. I was grateful for the experience of the ladies on here.

Duh! I just saw the dates from your OP. You've probably got the hang of met by now. PG brain has me in its clutches. I lost the pnm and trash bill and have to re-submit them too. Rare and crazy times for me.

Glad to see some local cysters on here.

Andrea

My blood work came back fine twice, and i wasn't over weight then either, but when i went to a different doctor she made sure the blood work was drawn on the "right day".
Then all the test came back pointing to pcos, it took me from the age of 13 to 23 to get a DX, so don't give up keep looking for your answers.
