Default Need Help Talking to Doctor

Hi Ladies,

I have a question for you all that I am hoping one of you can help me with. I was diagnosed this past August. My doctor put me on 200mg progesterone daily to induce a period. I have gone through 3 cycles now which I never thought possible. Only thing is that she said she didn't want to talk about medication for weight loss/other symptoms until 6 months later. I think she thinks that since I am single and not planning on having kids any time soon that Metformin isn't really necessary. Obviously at the time I had no idea how life changing Met could be. Now with all my research I really think I need it. I just want to feel normal again. Should I go back to the doctor and ask? I have been eating a low gi diet for 3 months now as well as exercising 6 days a week and haven't lost any weight. My acne is worse and I am starting to get hair where I would prefer not to have it.

Any advice?

Thanks so much!

Default Educate The Doctor

I would print some good articles that you find online. Go through them and highlight the references to long-term health effects of PCOS and then give them to your doctor. Tell the doctor that you want to treat your insulin resistance which is believed to be a major factor in the hormonal imbalances associated with PCOS. Tell her that you want to see if the metformin helps you have ovulatory cycles without using artificial hormones that result in an anovulatory induced period. If this doesn't work look around and find a doctor familiar with PCOS and who will work with you. That docotor may be a primary care provider, endocrinoligist or a gyn.
