Need help w/weight loss....exercise makes me GAIN!!
For the past 2 years, roughly, I have been trying to lose about 10 lbs. Doesn't sound major, but literally ALL the xtra fat is on my middle-the worst kind to keep. I can wear a size 8 in anything without the waist zipped.....my waist on the other hand is a 12-14.
Anyhoo....last week I started back into an exercise run/walk program. Just before that I was never very hungry and had started to lose a little weight after my miscarriage. I also had no appetite for junk or sweets before starting back into exercising. A week into the exercise program, and I am hungrier, feeling terrible, and up 2.5 lbs. This has happened to me many before as well.
So, any tips or advice? Anyone else in this boat?

cant help ya much but...once i walked A LOT. i was starved. moreso than usual. my nephew told me cos ure burnin calories and ur body is craving more fuel. wish i could help tho. maybe instead when you get a craving try drinking water. or if you crave junk eat something good. i can curb a craving for a soda by drinking water or junk by eating something healthy or just taking a small amount of food like chips and eating a handful instead of eating from the bag. problem is sometimes i end up craving junk MORE later on if its around.

You are probably gaining weight from muscle building up from exercising. You will start to lose weight after a couple of weeks.

Hollands right, muscle weighs more than fat so don't worry too much about that right now. Once you get into a regular regime your body will settle down.
To satisfy your cravings, try non sugar sweets or gum.

Yogi, not exactly the same, but definately am with you. I have pcos for 12yrs and also started exercising and was straving all the time. I gained alot of wt even w/exercise. I am now awaiting the final dx of hypothyrodism. Kim
Since you posted on the thyroid board I expect you are hypothyroid, correct?
If so, you will need a higher dose of medication if your activity level increases. This is something you will need to prove to the doctor, which means many weeks of pain and discomfort as you exercise yourself into hypothyroidism so your blood test will show a need for increased medication. Sigh.
When you are hypo, insulin resistance increases. Which means that you would of course gain weight and feel sicker.

The typical will remain the same. When exercising, try to each several low calorie meals a day. I try to eat 4 300 calorie or less meals a day when working out hard. And I try my best to work out hard enough to get close to or reach a negative calorie day (i.e. TONS of cardio or weight lifting so i can try to burn more calories than I am eating). And don't worry too much about the weight. If you are losing inches then you are doing the right thing. You will gain muscle which will weigh more and take up less space. So watch your inches.
Also - remember that almost 75% of the time, hunger is actually thirst. So always try to drink a glass or two of water real fast and see how you feel.
Stay hydrated. They suggest for ever 50 lbs you want to lose, try to drink a gallon of water extra (over the preferred 8 8 ounces) a day. You can clean your system this way.
Also doesn't hurt to try hydrocolon therapy. A lot of thryoid problems have been related to poor colon health. Clean your colon (5-10 treatments of hydrocolon therapy). Take Acidphopholis (sp???) regularly and get the bacteria level in your colon back on the good side. And cleaning your colon can help reduce inches. (sorry for getting gross here) Experts say the human body can have anywhere from 10-40+ lbs of compacted waste in the colon. Imagine how you would feel if it wasn't there? How much room would have, how many inches you could lose? I did it and I loved it. I only lost about an inch but that is because I am really regular. But if you are typically constipated - try it!

Sigh. I suppose this explains it...this has been going on forever....even through periods where I trained for a 1/2 marathon and then a biathlon. So its definetly not the initial effect of muscle building, and I am NOT losing inches...rather gaining them. Drink about 100 oz water a day. Not having cravings, just HUNGRY. Like lightheaded willing to eat tree bark hungry. If I didn't track my calories very carefully, I would indeed go waaay over my allotment of 1800 a day and no junk would need to be involved. I've been trying 2 tsp flaxseed oil every day at breakfast, hasn't helped with hunger but I feel better otherwise so we'll see how that pans out....

Have you tried chromium GTF? I get the kind by Solaray- it's brewer's yeast with active cultures. It is great with helping to control insulin resistance, although you may need to supplement your iron a bit with it (it liked to use iron). I could not control my IR symptoms at all while I was hypo until I started taking the chromium GTF.

One thing my friend tried was Organic Virgin Coconut Oil (you can buy it online and have it delivered). Virgin Coconut oil has been linked to better thryoid health. My friend would eat a tablespoon a day of this. It is in a solid form at some temperatues (room temp) and liquid at others. Very good to cook with (love it when sauteeing - i can't spell - bell peppers and onions). Anyway - she ate the 1 tablespoon a day and for her the weight just dropped off. Of course you will reach a plateau with it. I haven't been able to get myself to try it yet. I am not a huge fan of coconut itself - but i like cooking with it.

Is there a unflavored version of this that works? I actually have some but hardly ever use it since I don't eat or cook things very often that would taste OK with coconut flavor on them

I was told by my nutritionist to eat a serving of protein before i exercise like 30 minutes before and drink a lot of fluids. When you exercise your muscles are in shock and retain more fluids, the more you exercise the mor water you should drink within thaat day.

Mary Shomon: You feel that excessive aerobic exercise can be a cause of hypothyroidism. Can you explain this further? How much is too much?
Dr. Ray Peat: I'm not sure who introduced the term "aerobic" to describe the state of anaerobic metabolism that develops during stressful exercise, but it has had many harmful repercussions. In experiments, T3 production is stopped very quickly by even "sub-aerobic" exercise, probably becaue of the combination of a decrease of blood glucose and an increase in free fatty acids. In a healthy person, rest will tend to restore the normal level of T3, but there is evidence that even very good athletes remain in a hypothyroid state even at rest. A chronic increase of lactic acid and cortisol indicates that something is wrong. The "slender muscles" of endurance runners are signs of a catabolic state, that has been demonstrated even in the heart muscle. A slow heart beat very strongly suggests hypothyroidism. Hypothyroid people, who are likely to produce lactic acid even at rest, are especially susceptible to the harmful effects of "aerobic" exercise. The good effect some people feel from exercise is probably the result of raising the body temperature; a warm bath will do the same for people with low body temperature.
