I have currently become a foster parent and lost my insuramnce benefits from my previous job, I need metformin, I love it and I need it. I just wondered what happens when you have to go off of it. I have been on for almost 1 year, still no ovulation but it keeps me from bleeding between periods and keeps me having a monthly period. Please let me know what happens when you come off of metformin, I have been off of it for a week now and so far I am late having a period and I am scared to be in the rut of bleeding non-stop. jenlove

I would say do anything and everything to keep getting it b/c you don't want to see your health go backwards. Maybe the gov't help programs? Or maybe try buying meds online from Canada, which is cheaper. Or ask your doc for the highest dose (which may be cheaper than what you get) and cut the pills for your dose..Or if you have to reduce your dose to get by financial. But I say, make it #1 priority, especailly if you saw it was working so well. Maybe you can call around for a free clinic, and some clinics have free meds as well.
I was in a similar situation a few months ago -- I didn't have insurance for a few months, so I cut down to 500 mgs a day to make the pills I had last longer -- and I didn't really have any major problems, but I did see my PCOS symptoms worsen -- I would say do as much as you can to keep taking it -- talk to your doctor, or check the internet for discount prescription plans -- I know there are some out there.
Good luck!

Hi, saw your post and was going to let you know what has happened to me since I quit taking my meds. I stopped taking glucaphage due to losing my doctor. He had to take time away from his practice due to a family crisis. Anyway, in Tennessee you don't have a whole lot of options when it comes to doctors who treat PCOS efficently. I've been without my meds for almost a year. I stopped taking them since I couldn't be monitored. I have gained about 30 pounds, lost alot of hair on my head but gained it on my chin. I haven't had a period and I'm miserable. I have acne everywhere and I'm fighting depression. PLEASE PLEASE don't stop your medication. I'm in the process of looking for another doctor right now but the only one who seems to specialize in it around here is no longer taking patients.

ReJOn- Are there any docs in your area (Family, Internists ) at all?? Because this seems like a simple thing- they can just refill the order. I don't think too much can change as far as monitoring it, and any reg doc should be able to give you blood slip to monitor your basic electolytes and sugars.
Please try to see a doc and just tell them glucophage is current treatment of pcos, and have them call your previous doc if there's any questions. Or maybe your reg doc can refill the prescription over the phone, and refer you to a doc there that can monitor you. But to quit your meds b/c a doc moves is ridicuolous and if your having a hard time , don't give up- it this should NOT affect your health! Please go and try to do that ok??

Rebecca honey,
Thanks for sharing what is happening with you, but I will keep you in my thoughts because you need to get those pills. I have only gone one month without. I hope you find what you need. I am sorry that you have to go without.Jenlove
