I am new to the site, and PCOS. I was diagnosed about 3 weeks ago after trouble ALL my life. I was an overweight child, and was born with trouble digesting simple sugars. I have never been considered diabetic, but I have had my fair share of sugar problems. After going to 2 different gynocologists when I couldn't ovulate, I was FINALLY referred to an endocrinologist who gave me a diagnosis, and some reason for what was going on with me. I was put on metformin 500 mg for 2 weeks, and have stepped up to the 1000 mg for two weeks. Sunday I will start 1500 mg for 2 weeks. I had very little trouble adjusting, but I am finding it VERY difficult to get a decent diet going. We, unfortunately, eat out alot. I don't know if I need to go strictly protein, a few carbs but mostly protein, avoid sugar completely. I've never been much of an exerciser, but I'm trying to get on the boat. I'm mostly wondering what seems to work for everyone else, and if you can give me some good tips. I need any and all advice I can get because I have no choice but to overhaul my body and my life so I can get healthy, and hopefully have a child before I get too old. I could also use some good advice for when the BF INSISTS on going to a burger joint, and what I can eat there! LOL! Thanks in advance!
I highly recommend the insulin resistance diet. I assume from your comments that you have sugar problems, that you have IR. Also, we used to eat out frequently as well but with PCOS, it's almost impossible to eat out constantly and not gain weight. If you can change your lifestyle and cook at home, I think that would be the best bet. My dh and I are both doing the insulin resistance diet. I have lost 34 pounds in 3.5 months and he has lost 50 pounds in 3.5 months (don't you hate that guys can lose it so much faster). We follow the IR diet to the word but once every other week, we cheat for one meal. That way when we really want a big juicy burger or a peice of fried chicken, we know that we can, but it just has to be our cheat meal during that 2 week period.
Hope that helps and good luck

I do think it will make it a lot harder to eat out all the time and not be able to control what goes into the food. When I eat an extremely clean diet, I don't have many stomach problems on Met, but as soon as I eat something that is fatty or sugary, it is not good. I have also felt like regular exercise is helping the Met work better.
You may just have to be picky when you go out and get plain grilled chicken breast, steamed veggies, grilled fish, etc...You can always ask the place to skip the butter or oil they normally will cook it in.
You can also buy a CalorieKing book at a bookstore for under $10 - it will have the calories on just about every food and has restaurant info as well. This will help if you are going to count your calories.
Thanks Ladies! Great advice from both of you. I know we should eat at home more often and I do try to cook there as much as I can. The only problem I have is that I get off of work late, so by the time we both get off we are STARVING, so unfortunately eating out will probably remain in the equation for at least 2 to 3 nights a week, but I will take your advice carolina and try to make sure it is a good protein and veggies mostly. THANK YOU allieb for the insulin resistance diet info. I honestly hadn't heard of it, but I am going to check into that one. I'm also trying to find some good recipes for make ahead meals that would fit into my weekly routine so if you have any good recipes for that, I would REALLY appreciate it. I try to get all my veggies chopped and things prepped on Sundays for the week ahead for the meals I do make at home so my time isn't so crunched. He is also a diabetic, but like you said, allieb, he doesn't have to watch it NEARLY as much as I do, and he seems to lose weight by breathing sideways MEN! I swear if there is a life after this one I'm TOTALLY opting to be a guy! LOL! But then again, that may be worse Anyway, thank you for all the great advice, and caring enough to answer. This site is INVALUABLE!
