Default Need some advice/opinions!

Hello everyone. I’m 17 and I was diagnosed with PCOS a month ago. My symptoms are irregular periods (my last was in November 2004) and I have previously been treated with roaccutane for acne. I have found the news hard to come to terms with and am very scared of the future implications of the condition. My doctor put me on Dianette, which I have just completed 3 weeks of (now waiting for AF!). However, now that I have researched the condition and understand the insulin resistance problem, I want to come off the Dianette. I have an acupuncture appointment booked and will take chaste tree extract (I think that’s what it is) in an attempt to control my hormones naturally. Is this a good idea, or should I ask my doctor for metformin? I’m very confused and finding it hard to process all this information and decide what is right for me. Any comments or suggestions are very welcome.
Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Hi and Welcome! It is very overwhelming to learn about PCOS. I recommend getting some good books that will tell you a lot about it. The only one I can think of off-hand is PCOS: The Hidden Epidemic by Samuel Thatcher. Maybe some others will have more ideas about that.

Also, consider going on a diet that will cut out bad carbs - like pasta, potatoes, sugar, etc. I go by the "anything white" rule.

Metformin has been a wonder drug for me. I never ovulated on my own or had regular cycles and within 8 months of being on Metformin I was having regular cycles, allbeit long cycles. I would definitely contact your doctor and talk more with him about this. Make sure to do some research on your own first and take some articles citing Metformin use in treating PCOS. A lot of doctors are not very familiar with PCOS just yet. You may have to help yours along.

You have come to a great place to gain insight and get more knowledge. Absorb as much as you can!!

Good luck to you!

Hi, I was diagnosed when I was not much older that you. Its alot to take in, and it is difficult to understand. I don't how much info you have had from your GP, I didn't get much so I found it difficult to understand what was happening to me. Its only now that I am understanding more, and I feel more confident with the doctor now. Its hard to say about the meds, I don't take anything, but I know that some of the other cysters do. I take saw palmetto for the facial hair but thats it.

Anyway chat to you soon, take care. Feel free to contact me anytime, email or pm.

Bex

Hi Blue

Welcome to Soulcysters.

I came off Dianette in November and have had a period 3 times on my own (yay me)

BUT my skin is a mess, Dianette really helped in that area.

I went to see the gyno about met and she said she wouldn't put me on it so i am know waiting for an appointment to see an endocrinologist.

If you want to ask me anything, feel free

Lucy
