Default Need Some Advise, please

For a long time i've suspected i have a thyroid disfunction. I haven't been diagnosed with hypothyroidism (despite being told i'm "borderline" after testing). Because the doctors haven't wanted to treat me i've just ignored the symptoms, but now, when i swallow, i've began to notice a lump like feeling toward the left side - a bit like a clicking/grating sensation. I'm wondering if this is a common side-effect to a problem thyroid and if any one else had encountered it?.

Yes, for some people their thyroid gland will swell when they become hypo. If you are borderline, you should have your levels checked every six months (or some doctors will say every year). My thyroid gland was swollen when I was first dx'ed and then went down as my treatment progressed. I still have that lump-in-the-throat-feeling and for some, that will not truly disappear.

Also, I'm not sure what your doctor is indicating as 'borderline', but if your TSH is over 3.04, you should be given levothyroxine (or equivalent). Always ask for a copy of your lab results.

It is possible that you may have a goiter (enlarged thyroid) or even a nodule, which is very common. Has your doctos(s) every palpated your thyroid?

I suppose your doctor is going to allow your TSH level to rise, to what?, past 6 before s/he treats you? Then your doctor will do everything possible to bring that level back to around 1.0 where it should be.

Diet and exercise will help a little, but if you have a thyroid problem, you have a thyroid problem. A TSH of 4.9 is subclinical hypothyroidism and a proactive doctor would Rx you 12.5 - 25mcg of Synthroid and re-check levels in 6-8 weeks.

If you notice your symptoms becoming worse, please get your levels re-checked or go see another doctor. It only took my TSH to go just past 6.0 for me to lose 40% of my hair in one month's time. Also, I was so tired all the time...I was sleeping 12 hours a day and only got out of bed because I had to. I'm normally an active person who's always on the go. I understand everyone is different and responds differently...but I still wish someone would have told me something before it got so bad.

Also, a swollen gland (or goiter) should be examined via u/s or CT scan.

Best wishes!

Thank you to everyone who replied and apologies for taking so long to respond (i've just moved house.)

I went to my doctor regarding the lump-in-throat sensation and the minute i mentioned thyroid i got a shaking head as a response. He wouldn't retest my levels and sent me on my way with penicilian. I took the medicine to humour him and when it didn't work i went back, this time to a different Dr at the practice. This time i'm told it's to do with me stopping smoking - i stopped because of the lumpy feeling! But he wouldn't listen to that. Quite frankly i'm fed up shouting and being ignored...time to ditch the national health service and go private me thinks.

Sorry your docs are ignoring your symptoms. Has anyone suggested going to and endo? Perhaps they will listen more? That's great that you stopped smoking though!

HI,

My MIL had a similar experience and later found out that her goiter had enlarged. Anyway, have you checked out this product "Thyrosense"? I am taking it now coz I have borderline effects too and I can feel the difference. The website where I get all the useful info is www.healthyimmunity.com

Hope this helps.

you know I was borderline for years, but now I am hypo. You need to talk to your docs about putting you on meds in order to control your symptoms. I have heard of the lump in the troat and I would definately call your doctor to get it checked out and maybe have the retest your levels. good luck.

I was told I was "borderline" in 2000, but my doc didn't want to treat me because, "Once you're put on medication, you'll have to stay on it for life." However, when I saw a new doc in 2006, and I told her that I was borderline, she told me that if I had symptoms (dry skin, thinning hair, inability to lose weight, etc.), NOT treating it wouldn't make the symptoms go away! She did the lab tests, said I was still borderline, and promptly put me on 50 mcg Synthroid. The diet I'd been unsuccessful with for 3 months suddenly was working, and my hair improved.

I've got to say, though, the biggest relief was having a doctor who listened to my complaints and offered a solution, not just the same old 'live with it' answer.

I am really tired of listening to it. It's been a year that I watch my diet, workout for 40 mins( Yoga/aerobics) walk for an hour and still lost only 14 pounds in one year my walking bussy lost 50 pounds doing the same thing. To add on to this one single lee way in my diet gains me tremendous weight. It feels like ages since I slept heartly because too much sleep is causing a weight gain when I monitored. I am sleepy, tired and all classic hypo symptoms. But, no medication as of now. Consulted 4 endo's and all sing the same song, work out and excercise and borderline will drop on it's own.

I have never understood why some patients (I'm not implying you) and doctors think that being on medication for the rest of your life is a bad thing. I mean does anyone say when they get glasses for the first time, "Shoot, I'll be wearing these forever and I'll be able to see." No! Is it an inconvience at first to remember to take a pill? Sure, but it helps your body function as it should. Grrr, people like that drive me nuts!

Glad you were able to find a doc who listens...to me that is one of the most important elements of doctor/patient relationship.

I agree completely! The same argument could be made for antidepressants. You start to take it, you feel better, it doesn't mean you're 'cured' and can stop taking it, it means the medication is working. So, can you ever stop taking it?

Since I'm borderline and not drastically hypo, once I'm finally able to get my weight to normal and overall get healthier, maybe I'd be able to titrate my dose down to nothing. I don't know if that's possible, but even if it's not, I'm OK with that.
