Default Need Some Cysterly Advice (sorry if long)

Hi Ladies,
I wanted to get some opinions on what my doctor is having me do.

I've been on Metformin since October 2006. I've lost nearly 40 pounds, cycles are *starting* to get regular, I have no more migraine headaches, no pms.. etc....

Anyway, about 6 weeks ago (so 5 months into Metformin) my hair started falling out in a ferocious manner. In addition, my feet are always cold, and I always sit with a blanket at home. I feel generally tired too, like I felt before I started the Met. I pass out every night by 8:30pm (DH loves that...not!!)

I went to the doctor who said it could be my thyroid and he did some tests. My TSH was 2.24 and Free T4 was 1.11.

When he called with the test results, he said these lab values are fine. BUT, then he called back today and said since I'm having so much hairloss he wants me to try a 6 week course of thyroid medication to "boost" my thyroid.

My hesitation is that the lab values seem remotely normal, and I'd hate to add a "hormonal" medication to my day when I already have so many issues with crappy hormones.

Any Cysters out there with a similar experience who've had success supplementing "normal" thyroid values? Or do you think I should call him back, and press him on whether he thinks it is just the Metformin that is causing the hairloss??

Thanks soooo much for listening ladies! I appreciate all of your valuable insight.

With many thanks,
Amanda

Amanda,
I'm sorry you're going through all that!
I am in no way an expert on PCOS and Met (still learning about it myself) but to me, if your numbers are fine than I wouldn't want to go adding something to the mix. Did he have any suggestions on what else it could be? I mean I have low iron (9.3 low!) from my m/c in March and the symptoms I have/had from that is everything you said but the hair loss. (I loose hair naturally so to cut down on that I just wash it less) I'm not saying that you have low iron, but there could be something else causing your problems ya know?
Have you checked the metformin/glucophage site to see what the side effects of it are? Anything is possible so it could be from the met, although if it helped you in the beginning I don't know why all of a sudden it would go back, unless you need a higher dose now or something like that.. (how much are you taking?)

My numbers were just barley in range the first time I had thyroid check then the next time there were low. I start on thyriod meds and felt alot better. You have alot the symptoms of thyriod issue. Giving a boost could be what you need, alot of cysters have thyriod problems.

Thank you Ladies! It is so great to get so much support here. I appreciate you all so much.

I guess I'll give the thyroid meds a chance. I've been tested for thyroid issues TONS of times in my past, but this is the first doctor who has suggested treatment. I really do trust him, he has not steered me wrong yet.

Again, thank you for your advice.

Amanda

Have you tried the meds yet? I agree that if your Dr hasn't steered you wrong there's no reason not to trust him on this! Good Luck!
