Need some Med advice

I have been taking 500mg of Metformin for probably 5 years now. It helped me to get pregnant, lose 20 lbs and regulate my periods. For the past year, I have gone back to missing periods. I went to the Dr. today and he suggested that since I can't tolerate that 2nd 500mg dose (have tried several times to up the dose but it makes me so nauseous and doesn't go away with time), that I quit the Metformin altogether and take Provera every month from the 1st-10th. I know this will get my period going but is it safe to take Provera every month? My doctor seems pretty knowledgeable about PCOS but this doesn't sound right to me.

I don't understand why your dr wants you to take privera every month??? My dr told me a couple of times a year is enough (to prevent for uterine cancer or whatever). It isn't like it's a real period, so it wouldn't make your periods any more regular if you take it every month.
But that's just my opinion... and i'm no dr...

Can you try any other formulas of metformin, such as Fortamet? I have taken Fortamet 1000mg for 2 weeks w/ minimal side effects, only drowsiness and hunger pangs. Provera every month sounds kind of harsh, when I took prometrium I couldn't even drive.

thanks for the replies. I didn't know there was a different kind of Metformin out there. That might be something that will work.....

Fortamet is an extended release version of the pill, so the coating stays in tact and the metformin is released through laser etched openings. It's worth a try, since met is working.
