Question In need of someone's help...

I am so new to all of this... I was told by my doctor in June of this year that I had PCOS. I began taking Metformin in July. I am currently up to 4 pills a day. Am I supposed to be having diaherra all day? One good thing...I wasn't having a normal period and my doctor put me on Prevera to make me have one...but since I have been taking the Metformin I had a normal period this month without the Prevera. Is that a good thing? I am so lost...can someone give me some advice or help?
Hopelessly lost...

I just started taking Metformin a few weeks ago too. I got diarrhea a lot the first 2 weeks, but I have learned to watch what I eat, so now it's ok. High carbs, fried, and sweet foods can cause it. I also didn't have a regular period and took Provera. My period just started 9/3 with the Metformin. I was happy that I didn't need the Provera. I am sure it's a good thing. My doctor said it should regulate me. Good luck!

The Metformin is working...that's why you got your period without the Provera. It's a good thing. I also had diarrea really bad for the first 3 weeks of taking Metformin. I have learned to change my diet to low carb/low sugar foods and avoid fried foods. I personally have not experienced it, but others have said to stay away from lettuce as well. The side effects should go away shortly.

I agree with Carrie--it sounds like the met is working since you had a period on your own. It also sounds like you need to change your diet if you're still having tummy problems all the time. About the lettuce thing--I couldn't eat it for the longest time. Any kind of lettuce, even spinach, would make me painfully ill. I've been on met for about 17 months now, and I just recently decided I couldn't live without it and ate a big salad. (And it was GOOD!) Much to my surprise, I was fine afterwards! So the food aversions may be only temporary.

I can't take Met. It kills my stomach! My doctor just put me on Fortamet which is supposed to have less side effects. He also put me on a low dose and then will gradually increase me. You are on 2000 mgs in a short amount of time. No wonder you feel awful!

Ask for the Fortamet. Start on 500 mgs and then go up monthly.
