Hubby and I are planning a trip (most likely in June) to Australia. We have some friends who live there and have kindly invited us to stay with them. They are about 1 hour away from Brisbane, and said the closest airport to them is Coolangatta on the gold coast.
What do you suggest we make a point to See? Eat? Experience??

Byron Bay and Nimbin are farly close and a must see! Also youll be fairly close to the Gold coast and theres lots of theme parks there like Wet and Wild Waterworld, etc Not that ive been but im sure the others who have will give you more info. Also not too far is Hervey Bay and Fraser Island. Fraser is only accessible by 4wd. There are loads of whale watching and dolphin watching cruses (whales are Sepish i think if anyone else knows please correct me)
It is a very beautiful part of the world im sure you will love it!

There is heaps of things to do, but if you are coming in June, than it will be winter here (just something to keep in mind). Although, if you are coming to Queensland, it doesn't snow up here LOL so our winter might be like summer to you anyway!
Not only do you have the Gold Coast, there is Brisbane to check out, plus the Sunshine Coast.
These sites will give you lists of places to visit, attractions, all the sorts of stuff that you need to know. They also have maps on them so you can work out how far things are from your starting point etc.
Oh, there is also Tangalooma resort on Morten Island. They have day trips, etc. I'll post the web address tomorrow (when I find where I had it last...)
Too bad you weren't here come September, because Toowoomba has a BEAUTIFUL flower festival then.
Then there is Australia Zoo, north of Brisbane (Steve Irwin - Croc hunter).
If you're in Queensland, try to fit in a trip further north and go to the barrier reef - it's a great time of year in the tropics. If you can get a cheap flight to Cairns, go for it! I also think the hinterland around Brisbane has some of the best scenery on the east coast... but I know there are NSW devotees out there who will beg to differ!

There are heaps of really great places but i would suggest if at all possible you get up to Hervey Bay to go whale watching! It is truly wonderful and go in one of the smaller boats as they get closer to the whales - ie dont go on Mimi MacPherson's (Elle's sister) old boat it is huge and cant get as close to the whales. There are other places in QLD to go whale watching but i would recommend Hervey Bay as the best. While on the Gold Coast i would also visit Sea World it is well worth a look.

Hi - regarding the whale watching thing, I am hoping you are not too early for it as I grew up in Hervey Bay (pronounced Harvey) lucky me - and whale watching used to be from August to to October - and I say not to go on Mimi's boat either - we had a shop up there and she came in and was a complete cow! Your friends here on the Gold Coast (I'm guessing) should be able to get some discount vouchers for the theme parks - if not let me know and I should be able to find some somewhere - also with the theme parks (Movie world, Dream world & Wet and Wild) you can get a 3 day theme park pass & it works out a bit cheaper - only in the middle of winter I am guessing Wet and Wild doesn't sound too appealing. Mt Tamborine is only 40 minutes from the Gold Coast and is beautiful (I got married up there so I am biased). It would be a lovely time to go up the mountain and stay in a lovely cabin or something. Having said all of this, I have read all the other threads and everyone elses suggestions are great too - how long have you got???

We're now leaning toward August or September, so it sounds like I may have an even better opportunity to see some great things. I want to thank you all for your help and ideas! this is SO exciting!
What about food? What must I absolutely try?

I have given this a bit of thought and these are the yummy restaurants I have come up with so far (on the Gold Coast)
Costa Dora - Orchid Ave Surfers Paradise (our favourite Italian)
ZEN - Jupiters Casino Broadbeach (our favourite Chinese)
Ashmore Steak and Seafood - Ashmore Rd Ashmore (yummy seafood)
Cavs Steakhouse - haven't been there for ages but friends went last night and said it was excellent (big juicy steaks and other yummies)
Hard Rock is good but you can no doubt go there at home.
If I think of any more 'must eat's' I'll add to the list.
I'm a bit hungry now...
