Default nervous about starting met again

I have an appt. with the gyno in a few days and I need to start back on met.
Met did not really agree with me when I first started taking it and it made me pretty sick in my stomach. What dosage should I recommend? 500 mg or 1500 mg? Also Is there a difference if they give me generic (glucophage) or is it basically the same??

The important thing is to increase your dosage. So, you should definitely start on the lowest dose, 500 mg to start. After your body adjust to that you can make another increase.

I just restarted and am going to probably give it a week before moving up to the next dose.

But, if you had stomach troubles before, I wonder what kind of foods you were eating in your diet? Try to limit bad carbs and sugar if at all possible, and remember to drink your water!

I started met in June again after a break of YEARS.... i started out with 1000mg. I was sick, but I was so determined to beat the side effects that I plugged thru it. I was used to the met for a couple of days and I went to 1500. I couldn't handle it so I went down to 1000. I was ALMOST going to quit it. But then I thought, if I am used to 1000mg, then upping it slowly would be best. I did just that and VERY slowly. I would cut 1 pill in 4ths. So I would have 1 pill and breakfast, and one at supper, when I cut that one pill into 4ths then, I would eat the 1/4th at breakfast for the 4 days. Then I would eat 2 1/2 pills, upping my does by 1/4th for supper. I eventually got to 2000mg, 2 pills in the morning, and 2 pills at night. When I cut them into 4ths I never had any side effects except the occasional bathroom runs. it took a long time but it was worth it.

Maillady, that does not sound like a bad idea! I should try that when I go back on.

lavender- My diet was not very good while on met but I have been dieting for about a month now and only lost a few lbs. so hopefully the met will work in with my diet and exercise routine I have going on here!

Cortana... it worked for me. Although I had to suffer thru the 1st 1000mg. (SOOOO glad I did) I guess if you wanted to (if u r not in a hurry) start out with just a quarter of the pill. 4 days later u will be up to a half. Worth a try if you are having doubts

Like you, I had horrible side effects from Met. I had diarrhea for 8 months straight on 1500mg/day. When I went to my dr. on Thursday, he told me that I need to go back on it, but only take what my body can handle, which will be about 1000mg/day (2 doses). Maybe talk to your dr. about this, too (taking what your body can handle, whether it is 500mg/day or 2000mg/day). Best of luck to you.
