Never have AF, naturally very thin: any success with IR diet?
Brief history: naturally thin (5'6", 113 lbs can eat whatever I want and not gain) and RARELY have a non-induced AF. I'm talking once every 2-3 years. I've been on Metformin since July. I ovulated once but was on a bunch of other hormonal medicine at the time for a hysteroscopy so I don't even know if it was the Metformin. Since then, NOTHING. It is so frustrating to say the least.
I'm wondering if the IR diet would help. I was wondering if anyone had luck with it. I have had one dr. in the past tell me that she thought I wasn't ovulating because I was too thin...so I am concerned that I may lose weight. I feel like I am stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Any success stories or thoughts would be appreciated.
I'm gonna start the IR diet myself! I just got the book -- I haven't read it yet, but I skimmed through it so I'll try to apply some of the principles. It's basically all about balancing -- I don't think you'll end up eating a lot less than we used to, unless you gave in to your carbs craving daily.
I don't know if I'm naturally thin or the PCOS weight gain just hasn't started yet, but I don't want to find out. -_- I'm 5', 89 lbs btw.
I use the IR diet and I like it a lot. I find it easy to follow. I had lost weight with met but then quit it due to the s/e and have lost at most 10 more lbs with the IR diet (which is what I want). You can eat 5 or 6 times a day, so you might be able to get enough calories to not lose any more.I started ovulating pretty regularly with the met and was able to sustain it with the IR diet once I stopped the met. After a couple of months with just the diet, I added some herbs (see my sig).Hope that helps!Kate

Changing your diet, following IR diet, or whatever else is similar is certainly a good idea and should cause success. Like a previous poster, I also find 5-6 "meals" a day is helpful. (See my profile). I don't follow the IR Diet because I haven't actually read the book, but from the summary posted on the diet and exercise board, it is similar in many ways to what I use. Basically, I eat mostly fibrous fruits and vegetables and lean meats. I also only drink water or tea. I add in healthy fats which include olive oils, fish oils, avocado, nuts. After following this particular diet for only a month, both my husband and I dropped a pant size. I know that sounds bad since I was thin to begin with, but adding strength training exercises into my routine helped get the weight back up, even though the pant size hasn't increased. As an added bonus, my acne cleared right up too!

I hear you on that one! I found it difficult to make the change, and it still is taking time to let some things go. One thing I found that helped was to actually do the 5-6 meals thing. It allows a specific time for me to dedicate to strictly following the diet. For example, in the middle of the AM, I eat some fruit. Before, I might have snacked on a cookie. By saying to myself, "I can eat right for at least one snack in the AM and one in the PM", I was able to slowly adapt to the new food choices because I still let myself eat the carbs at other times of the day. I have since moved on to doing this with most of my "meals". Also, not skipping a meal and drinking plenty of water keeps my focus off the lack of cookies lying around.
