Default New to this...

Hi all,

I've been recently diagnosed with PCOS after years of irregular cycles, hirsuitism and weight gain (especially around my abdominal area). I have also been diagnosed this year with high blood pressure, raised cholesterol levels, anxiety and depression. My doctor wants to check my glucose levels again in January and said that if my blood sugar is high (currently 5.8 and doesn't like it to be higher than 5.5), she wants to start me on Metformin. I've read heaps of stuff on this forum and other sites about PCOS and Metformin etc which has been helpful but I'd like to hear from people who have experienced this first hand themselves. Reading books about this is great but it's not as good as hearing from others who are in the same situation.

Any advice or general information about your own experiences with PCOS, Metformin or the same PCOS symptoms as me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Debbie

Hey honey, im new too and have posted a few questions of my own as although i have had PCOS for ages now it is all still quite scary and upsetting!
I have been on metformin for 3 years, maybe a little longer and i must admit it may be helping with the weight thing, with the pcos i put on SO much weight, right up to a uk 18 but since taking the metformin i have stayed around a size 14 and although i still have the belly and am overweight for my height i think it may be the tablets keepin me around this size as i eat stuff i shouldnt and i really believe you need to have a healthy diet with pcos, but thats easier said than done especially when your feeling so down!!
The metformin does tend to upset my tummy if i eat the wrong kinda food, like fatty, greasy etc and i have to run to the loo alot (lol) but when i eat sensibly it doesnt affect me much atall x
My cholesterol is also far too high, 7.6 at my last blood test! the metformin doesnt seem to have helped with this so i am on simvistatin which i take every night before bed!
Everyone is different though so the metformin may work wonders for you, all we can do is try!
you know i probably make no sense as i ramble on too much so apologies but if you wanna talk im here xxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks so much for the welcome everyone.

Kentbird - thanks for sharing your story with me. I can certainly relate to everything you said. My cholesterol was 7.2 then when tested again it was down to 6.7 or something like that but the good cholesterol was down and the bad cholesterol was high which is why the doctor put me on a cholesterol tablet. I am due for another round of testing in January. I was a fairly large clothing size too (size 20 Australia). After a stress related "meltdown" and 6 months off work, I am now down to a size 14-16 (Australia). I've changed my diet and am trying to follow a low GI eating plan which I find helps tremendously but the sugar cravings are a problem at the moment and I find that I am eating the sweet stuff I shouldn't be eating (lol)!! I'm just debating whether or not I should go back to my doctor and talk to her about this as the sugar cravings are getting worse. What do you think?

I too carry a lot of weight around my abdomen and find it is going but very, very slowly. It can be soooo frustrating!! I've also increased my exercise and do that for about an hour a day but only 5 days a week. All this can be so mentally and physically draining!! I think I am rambling on now so I'll finish here and hopefully hear from you and others who are experiencing the same symptoms.

dlj1972,
I am on Met, have been for over a year, just a few months ago I switched to extended release met, and take all of my meds at dinner.. After a year of the WORST cramps, Nausea, and embarrasing bathroom trips, I have to say that I have hardly any side effects with the Met XR.. other that it seems I get a stomache ache when I have milk, or alot of sugar, and that is new to me>>?
Good luck with it! Let me know how that goes!

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I will go back to the doctor and see what she thinks. I love this forum - there is so much information on here that I haven't found anywhere else. Thanks again.
