Default New to board and PCOS

Hi my name is Heather. In 1996 before getting PG I weighed 120 and I didn’t see that number again until my 3rd child was 5 years old that was in 2004…. I actually got down to 110 and was maybe a little to skinny…. then in or around Dec 05 I began putting on weight no big deal at first then by June of 06 I had not had a period in 6 months (never been regular but this was extreme) I went to Family Doctor who did ultrasound and some blood work which every thing came back normal. Neither of us pursed anything because I have no health insurance and unless it’s absolutely necessary we don’t spend the money. Oct 06 still having irregular periods, mood swings, had to start wearing maternity pants to have clothes fit me properly or hip huggers (thank heavens it’s the style). I went back to regular Doctor who said with my history of adenomyosis (Dxed 2000) that he thought I should go talk to my OB/GYN about a hysterectomy. My GP and GYN talked by phone before I went to see her and set up another ultrasound in her office…and based on what she found and didn’t find she said without blood work if she had to guess she would say I had PCOS. So I came here to learn about PCOS and found to it was considered an endocrine disorder and called my uncle (an endocrinologist, how lucky am I?) who lives in New Orleans (3 hours form me) and said what is this PCOS and we got to talking and he told me to come and see him and he would get me all the proper testing. He tested me for Cushing’s among other endocrine issues and ruled out everything but PCOS. The only thing I learned before testing results was I was showing signs of insulin resistance even though my blood sugar levels were normal.

In Feb I along with my records from my uncle’s testing went back to my GYN and she started me on METFORMIN AND FEMCON Fe for a 3 month trial I go back to see her the first of June to determine if we keep m n this treatment. So far the only thing I can say was different is when I started this first month of BCP I bled off and on most of the month so far my second month has been a “normal” response to being on BCP I have lost 10pounds YAY but still look as if I am 7 months PG and started walking 3 days a week. As for my diet, my husband is a Type I diabetic so we already eat a healthy diet in my house! That also complicates things he just was finally approved for disability after 2 years of waiting. So we have a fixed income and I have no insurance so I have to do what I can and would love to find more alternatives. I know I have a lot to read on this sit and I look forward to getting to know some of you as I go through this learning time.

First off, Welcome to SC!! There is lots of good info on this site!!
Second, you said you have no insurance, can you get on the free state insurance? (medicaid) like here it is called Mass Health, and all appt's and testing are free, and then for the meds it's $1.00 for generic and $3.00 for non generic.

My state is too poor to offer adults medcaid unless they are pregnant

I have looked at many insurance programs but my DX of fibroids keeps me from bing insurable under an individal plan(shurgs shoulders) and I am not going to go out and get a job just for group insurance lol

I am going to talk with my Doctors in June and see if she can help me talk to BC/BS about the fibroids and appeal their ruling.
