Hello everyone! I am 16 and am going to be a junior this fall. My entire life revolves around acting and school.
I guess I first noticed a problem when I started my period at age 10. My friends at the time had no clue as to what a period was other then it's purpose of ending a sentence. I didn't have any issues at the time other then the occational missing a period. No big deal. Then about the time that I was 13, my period just went nuts. I went for three months straight with a heavy period. My mom, having never heard of PCOS, kept telling me that it would straighten itself out. Finally, I went to the doctor only to be told that I just needed to lose weight. This has got to be one of my major medical pet peeves! If I go to the doctor about a problem, they always ,even if I'm there for an eye exam, go to the weight topic. Gotta love doctors. =) This particular doctor's first thought was that I had a blood disorder called (if I remember right) Von Willabrands disease and sent me to the local hospital to get tests done. Seven hours and 4 tests later, the tests showed that there was nothing wrong with my blood. (I could've told them that) That same doctor then dicides that maybe the depo shot would smooth things over. To make a long story short-er, I stopped for about a week then started again heavier then ever. I was THEN put on two different birthcontrol pills (the first shot my blood pressure through the roof) for the next year and a half. I decided that I wanted off the pills and was fine for another year. I had no problems. Then I didn't have my period for three months. Now at the time, I was thinking "This is the life! No period for me." God and his irony proved me wrong. My hormones were off and I would cry at the drop of a hat and explode at nothing. I even cried over the store not having Krispy Kreme doughnuts! I mean I wept for a good two hours. Going to another doctor, I was shocked to find that their was a reason for all of this. I was diagnosed with PCOS six months ago. This doctor knew what she was talking about and immediately gave me the facts that I needed to live with this. FINALLY, after almost 4 years of not knowing what was wrong, I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. Every sign of PCOS, I had and didn't even know it. Now that I know what I'm dealing with, I find myself more confident in myself.
If anyone has any questions about my signs or what I dealt with, I'll be more then happy to answer.
Oh, and if you are reading this sentence, you actually took the time to read this terribly long post and I thank you from the bottom of this big ol heart of mine! =)
hey fierce princess! welcome the the board!!
i kno your pain, i've never really had trouble with my period (touch wood) but i went through and still go through the mood swings, depression anxiety etc!
i went to the doctor and demanded to get the test done for pcos (when i was 15), so i got them but he decided all i had was a hormone inbalance, how he missed everything eles, the insulin levels nd what not i have no idea and he pretty much said you can live with it! so it tock almost a year, to find a doctor that knew what they were talking about, to put me on the right track!i'm now 17 and happily on meds that have somewhat improved my life!
its funny how hardly any doctors know about pcos! and if they do the info they have on its so little that it leave people untreated causeing even more health problems!
Welcome to the board hunny! I hope everything gets straightened out for you. I take Prometrium to have a period every month, but it's in hopes of concieving.
Location: Kansas City, KS formerly from Overland Park but had to change it here since someone asked me to, will not mention any names because Chula might get mad.....lol
Congratulations for finding out what you have. I know exactly how you feel when you say that you find youself more confident since finding out. It too was a weight lifted from my shoulders to know that I have PCOS, not the best thing to have but at least we know what it is and what to do about it.

Hey, wow, i am still so amazed that their are people out their my age that are going throught and have went through some of the same things i have had to go through, I just joined a couple of days ago, and just found out about a week ago that I have PCOS, I like you had to go through a couple of doctors for them not to look at me like I am crazy, blam it on my weight, or just put me on birth control. So i know what you are going through, and when I read about you having your period for so long and it being really heavy, my goodness i felt so bad for you I have had awful problems with mign I eaither get it for a long time or I dont get it at all and when it comes it floods!
They just started to treat me yesterday with meds. so I am interested on how that is going to work!!!
