i just checked out from our local library the only book that they had on pcos which coincidentally was just published in 2005. it is called "Polycystic Ovary Syndrome" A woman's guide to identifying & managing pcos, by author Dr. John Eden.
I was just reading it (the chapter on IR) and was going to ask what people think (but you beat me to it)! I think it's pretty darn well written and researched and now I think I understand insulin resistance better and why apple cider vinegar works for me. I'm not sure I agree 100% about the GI diet being best, but I don't think it's a bad thing by any means. I'm hoping that the rest of the book is equally informative. I really like the case studies too.
yeah, this dr. that wrote the book really seems to know what he's talking about. i liked it....i just checked it out this afternoon, and finished it at 9pm before law and order!!
Hi Jess,
Thanks for posting. The book has was released here a while back & it was written by an Australian Dr, he's a reproductive endocrinologist. It's great to hear it has been released in the US as well.
Nicole, the Low Gi diet is usually the most recommended by Aussie Dr's for their pcos patients, they seem to prefer it to low carbing diets. I think that's because low gi is viewed by Dr's here as a healthy way to lose and the variety makes it easier to follow.

He explains about how GI is related to digestion and conversion of carbohydrates into fat cells (this part is really interesting). Then he says that the acid in vinegar causes our stomachs to digest things more slowly. "Acids in food delay the stomach emptying, so they slow the rate of a food's digestion." Then he mentions vinegar. So another way of thinking about it is by adding vinegar, we lower the GI of whatever meal we've just eaten (or are about to eat).
And I think the GI diet is probably better than say, straight Atkins, but I also don't think it's perfect-- under GI it would be better to eat a Mars bar than a banana. I think the whole nutritional package of the food needs to be looked at, not just its glycemic index. I don't think he stressed that enough. So it's a good base for us, but I don't think it's perfect.
yeah, i noticed that it was published in Australia...some of the words are spelled differently....i can't think of which ones now....geez. is memory problems a symptom of pcos?? cuz boy do i have them!

you Australian folks and your oestrogen-- it honestly took me a little bit to realize that wasn't some new hormone I'd never heard of!
I've finished the book and I have to say it's the best one I've read so far! (Keep in mind I haven't read the one Kat advertises on the site mainly due to laziness...I don't think the library here carries it) I would recommend it to anybody-- it really does have everything... most books are either very technical and don't boil things down so they're understandable, or don't explain any of the research or different viewpoints at all and just say things that might conflict with other books so you don't know which to believe.
This one does a great job of explaining all the different theories, what studies support which ones, and how that applies to our lives and our treatment. It really does a good job explaining why different doctors recommend different treatments and which are better for which women and backs it up with tons of research for pretty much every condition related to PCOS. Two thumbs up!
Ok, I think I've probably raved enough about this book... I probably need a new hobby.
lol! nicole, oestrogen, huh lol i callit estrogen cause i know that its the same darn thing, drs over here are very accurate in the words (SOMETIMES) but yes i agree we do have weird ways of spelling !
I might see if i can grab the book and read it! I have only one book for pcos! its american lol

yeah, the oestrogen thing threw me off too!!! also, i think the word fetus was spelled different or something. but don't quote me. yeah, call me dumb, but it totally baffles me that in australia, you speak the same language but spell some things differently?! i know....total ignorance, but i guess i have to look at it in the way that in australia, to see american stuff, its probably a little different too! i've lived a sheltered life girls. on another note, australia is the first place i would like to see when dh and i can finally afford to travel outside of the us!!! it looks so pretty!
Hey, an Australian book, I'll have to check it out! Is there much in there of use to thin cysters?
So far, I must say that most books I've seen on PCOS are a little elementary. The one by S. Thatcher, though, is terrific.
Funny to hear everyone was confused by Australian spelling!!
I've been in the US for long enough now that my spelling has become rather schizophrenic...I can manage to use both in the one sentence. I've gotten into the habit of replacing "colour" with "color", and occasionally "center" instead of "centre", but I still use "cheque" not "check", and I'm never going to replace "learnt" with "learned"...it just doesn't sound right!!
