My name is Kristen and I'm 29 years old. I was diagnosed with PCOS in April of 2007. I have had irregular cycles and horrible periods since I was 9. I suffer from hirsutism and insulin resistance. DH and I were married December 1, 2007 and decided to wait on TTC because I wanted to lose weight. Unfortunately, that was a lost cause and I'm tired of waiting. I am considering trying the IR Diet or the Low-GI Diet.
We've already been TTC, but to no avail. I've used an OPK for the last two months and I can't seem to catch when I'm ovulating. We're really ready to be parents and I honestly have no idea how to begin (aside from the obvious) to aim for a BFP. Any advice would be helpful and much appreciated.
Kristen, I just wanted to say Hi. You know me as StacyO from another message board. I too came to this website today for the first time because I feel so lost and out of control. It's crazy that your post was one of the first ones that I saw on here. I am not yet TTC because I know it will be a lost cause. I don't have any advice for you because I don't know what to do myself...I just hope that you can find someway to control your symptoms so that you can have the baby you want so badly. Good luck sweetie.
For the insulin resistance... talk to your doctor about Metformin in the extended release pills. For PCOS patients, losing weight can be a lost cause. The Metformin (aka Glucophage) will help the sugar cravings go away and will also help your body metabolize the sugar more effectively. This will also help the hirsutism just a tad bit (or did in my case). Also, this will help you on your goal to losing weight. It is no miracle drug but with a decent diet and plenty of water, you will see results. TTC in our condition is already hard enough. Adding a bad or not so good diet to it just makes things worse. The more sugar I eat, the more hair grows, and the more AF is whack. With the metformin, changing your lifestyle to a more healthy one will not be nearly as hard. I can't say that I eat perfectly everyday or that I am even close to my ideal weight. However, I will say that I am getting there and trust me IT HELPS ALOT! Also, look on ebay or other websites for a lubricant called Preseed (about $8-$15). This will help all of his little swimmers reach the right place safely. OPKs are no good to most PCOS patients. Buy yourself a basal body thermometer ($8-$10) and begin taking your temps every day. You can do more researching on temping online and this will be more likely to show your ovulation time than any OPKs. There is a thread called TTC in our 20's and Beyond March Edition. I will get a link posted in a few minutes for you. There are ALOT of women our ages that are ttc and everyone is so supportive and caring. It is a great group.
Have you talked to your doctor? Does your insurance cover TTC? Let me know and I can give you more pointers.

Thank you for the link, Jessica. I will definitely check that thread out.
As for insurance covering any TTC procedures, unfortunately ours does not. It's a pretty basic plan, so right now, it's all on us. I've got plans to buy some supplements like Vitex, Cinnamon and Saw Palmetto. I've been doing some reading about them and based on my research, it seems like they've helped people out a bit. Right now, I'm attempting to read this site in it's entirety to get a grip on everything. I don't really understand all of the "CD12" and other abbreviations yet. This is a completely different message board setup than I'm used to.

CD - cycle day
DPO - days past ovulation
AF - Aunt Flo (period)
BBT - Basal body temp
BFP - big fat positive (preg test result)
BFN - big fat negative (preg test result)
Those are a few.
Our insurance doesn't cover much of ttc. The good thing is that if there is a wal-mart pharmacy in your area, the metformin is on the $4 list. Also, talk to your obgyn and let them know that you are ttc. He/she will most likely recommend the metformin for the PCOS symptoms and if you decide to do something like clomid (fertility drug) then they are on wal-marts $9 list and your gyno may prescribe it for you. If you are honest with your dr. about the insurance issue, most of them will work with you and code your visits as lack of menses or something to that effect. (Well, at least they will in my experience)
Do not let PCOS or TTC overwhelm you. Pray about it and God will bless you in His time. I have tried the Vitex and cinnamon. I didn't have much of a change but some other people have claimed wonders so it is worth giving a shot! Good luck.

I'm going to definitely mention it to my obgyn and my primary care physician. Anything would be helpful right now. I can also speak to my RE..but I'm not even sure he's covered under our new plan.

Thank you so much for your insight. It's great to have friendly people who are willing to pass along advice. I'll let you know what happens with my doctors.

I didn't realize that either, Stacy. I'm going to bring it up to my doctor. I've begun to get frustrated without the Met, so I'm going to push for it.

Go with the extended release tablets! They are WONDERFUL!!! At first, my obgyn put me on the met 2000mg that were not extended release. I was so sick all of the time. Now I am on the XR pills and only 1500mg a day. They seem to be working wonderfully. As a matter of fact, I got a bfp just last week with the met only but it seems to be ending in a mc. I am thoroughly confused about it but it will all work out I guess. The explanation is on the link above if you click it and go to the last page.
