Hello all! Im brand new here and I am so glad I found a support site for people in my situation- ALL the pieces have fallen into place now that Ive heard about PCOS but its scaring me that I was the one that had to do the research on it on my own. But anyway- Here's my story....
I'm 29- married for 7 months- overweight (about 220 lbs). I've always been somewhat big- figured my hubbie and I have added that "wow we live together and we can eat whatever we want whenever we want weight" so I wrote my new weight gain off as nothing. I have no children but I would give my life to be able to have them someday. I can't even go there because its too emotional t o think that theres a chance I could not have babies....
ANYWAY- My regular doctor had put me on Metformin to help control my weight. This was before I heard anything about having PCOS- my reg doc mentioned that thats what the med is used for but he wants to try it on me for WEIGHT REDUCTION only- I didnt have PCOS. Started noticing problems with my period....not sure if it was when i began taking the metformin or before or after or when- my life is all jumbled! My cycle would be 31 days...then 25 days...for me that was too screwy. My PMS got worse and worse and I was miserable. SO I went to my gynecologist. He saw that I was on Metformin and said "Oh you have PCOS" I was like what is that- he said thats why your doc has you on Metformin. I was like NO he put me on it for weight and it was like a tug of war between me and my gynecologist of why i was on this medicine. So he said thats why you have acne (I had like 3 zits- i didnt consider it ACNE) and he pointed to my hair and said it was thinning (never noticed that before) and he said thats why my periods are screwy.
I left crying.I didnt know if my gynecologist was being just cold to me or if he was RIGHT- now that i stare at myself...I see the brown/black discoloration on my neck in the creases, and my inner thighs (I thought that was from being fat? ) And I notice that my chin has grown much more hair- fine hair but enough that from a profile I can see it....I read about all the symptoms and im like My God I have this- I dont know if this is psychological or if I coincidentally developed PCOS at the same time I was prescribed the metformin for ANOTHER issue? I have an appt with my reg doctor tomorrow and I need to straighten this out- I cant have two docs that I normally trust giving me opposite answers. Honestly I dont care what I have- I just want to know how it affects my fertility. My gyniecologist tells me that Metformin is also prescribed for women to try to get pregnant (i assume it induces ovulation) and i should be pregnant in 3 months. Im not TRYING but we're not really preventing trying to get pregnant (we use no birth control but he pulls out) I was on the pill in the past but because of my high blood pressure my reg doc took me off. So...whats my story? I dont know- Had to sort of vent and im glad I found a place to do that and I hope you all dont mind but I wanted to just lay my groundwork and hopefully I get more answers tomorrow after my appt!
hi there im new here as well found this site about 1.5 weeks ago, just wanted to welcome you and tell you there is a answer for everything here! i just love it, and dont give up on the baby thing it can happen just read some of the stories on here and you'll see there have been many who were told they would NEVER have and have had many!
Welcome to SoulCysters. My advise for you is to start reading about PCOS so that you'll feel some sort of control over its symptoms. The symptoms can be managed with medicine, diet, and exercise. Feel free to post questions all over the board.

Welcome pawsny! Unfortunately, I can't help out with too many of your questions, since I've never been on Met, but I would suspect that your first doctor put you on that knowing you had pcos. He might not have told you that, but he probably knew. I was put on bcp years ago because af was basically non-stop if I was off any medications. Did the midwife mention anything about pcos or even check to see if I had it by bw or an u/s? Nope! She just told me that if I ever wanted to get pregnant, I should see a specialist right away. Fortunately, I did that 6 months ago and I was able to get dx. You said you have an appointment tomorrow, but I didn't see if that was with your ob/gyn, an RE, or a different doctor. Hopefully things will get worked out soon... and don't give up on ttc!!

wow...I am FLOORED by all the welcomes and comments I got just from ONE POST!!! Thank you guys so much for all your support and friendliness- I can only hope that as time goes on I can show you the same
I went to the doctor today (reg doctor- not gynie) Been blessed with Bronchitis but while I was sitting there I asked him about my whoel PCOS saga- he explained to me that PCOS is not really a 'disease' or a 'syndrome' that someone could catch or just get...its for women with a collective group of symptoms and much of it- in his medical opinion- is weight related. Because with the high weight comes insulin problems, and a million other problems. So he eased my mind a little and said that when my bronchitis is cleared up he'll do extensive bloodwork and check EVERYTHING out so I can get my life in some sort of order! In the meantime though i'm to take my usual 1000 mg a day of Metformin to help with my weight loss/insulin/ovulation (My God Metformin is like a cure all for everything! LOL!)
Is anyone else on MEtformin and how much? He may increase me depending on my numbers after next week's bloodwork... THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING SO CARING!!!!
Hi there...I am new too and found your story very interesting. I felt the same way as you. My hubby got so bad he was like whats the doctors problem..and then after I got my blood test the dr. said she "thought" that I had it.. so I went to an ob/gyn that specializes in fertility (hour&half away) and she told me finally that I had PCOS. I to am on Met and am currently at 1000mg in 3 mons. I will go up to 1500mg. I wouldn't say its a weight loss pill but it does help out alot. I am currently eatting less carbs and only eatting 3 meals no snackers for me. I wish everyone on this forum lived here so we could all get together for a healthy lunch and work out video, but I am glad I finally have a place to go at night to discuss the "how I feels". Feel free to email or AIM me anytime. It would be nice to connect with someone who has "my" story.

Welcome to SC. Take a look around the board and Learn as much as you can!! I take metformin. It ahs helped me with my weight but it has also restored my cycles and ovulation. Met can help with ovulation and my doc told me it was an appetite suppressant. I'm glad you found a good doc tht will work with you and I hope you get over your bronchitis soon!!!!
