Hi, my name is Beth; I am 22 years old and have been suffering from symptoms of PCOS for 5 years. A little about my personal life.. I got married to the most wonderful man January 2006; I work in a bank in my home town. All my life I have been very athletic and active.
Medical history:
I started my cycle when I was 10 years old at the weight of 130 5'4" tall. By the age of 12 I was 5' 7" and weighed 150 lbs. Over the summer of 6th and 7th grade (12-13) I gained 40 lbs. I was just as active that summer as I had been all the summers before. My period had never been regular which I did not mind at the time.. I would be on a month off a month. By the middle of my 8th grade year I had skipped 6 months worth of periods. My family physician contributed that to hormones. The years went by and diets failed because my weight increased. I went to my first Gyno appointment the summer of my 18th year. I had skipped so many periods that year that I couldn't even tell the doctor when my last cycle was. She suspected then that I had PCOS (at the time I had no idea what it was.) She put me on a low dose birth control. I started to college the next fall and started experiencing stomach problems. I went to a Gastroenterologist and was diagnosed with IBS and Fatty Liver Disease and was subsequently taken off the pill. My Gyno discovered I had high cholesterol and insulin resistance so I was placed on Metformin and Lipitor for 3 months. I tipped the scales by 2005 at 270 lbs, my arms and legs muscular and firm all my weight sits around my belly. I have been told I look like a chicken with bird legs and a barrel belly. In July 2005 I went to my Gyno because I had skipped 9 months + worth of cycles. The words of PCOS came up again but nothing was done. After all the weight gain and the sluggishness and having my blood levels show a thyroid imbalance once I asked that my Gyno refer me to an Endocrinologist. I found out I have Auto Immune Thyroid Disease, insulin resistance and to her notion PCOS, but since the Gyno had not Dx'd it then it must be something else. SO the test began... meds after meds after meds... until finally my Gyno called me in for another exam and asked if I had an ultrasound on my ovaries and uterus. I hadn't so she sets me up for one... low and behold my ovaries are covered and I mean basically black with cysts. After reviewing this material my doctor called me up at work and told me that I have PCOS and that she is no longer comfortable treating me. SO she refers me to a Reproductive Endocrinologist, which I am to see October 5th.
That's pretty much me in a nut shell except.. I am an easy going fun loving person.. that loves to laugh and have a good time. (Sorry the post was so long)
Hi Beth,
No need to apologize about the long post!
We love to hear from new ladies and your story was very interesting.
You have certainly come to the right place for support.
These gals are the greatest and I know you will love it here!
WELCOME and Good Luck!
Hey Beth
I'm Georgia. I've just been recently diagnosed with PCOS and I'm not sure how to feel about it really. From January till like June I didn't have a period, and then I finally had it, then I skipped 2 months, and it was just crazy. I knew something was wrong so I went to my doctors here in my town. My doctor said he thought I had PCOS so I had some tests done and an ultrasound....nothing came back bad. I went to my other doctor in another city and told him what has been going on and he refers me to another doctor. So I saw him and he also did tests, and the results say i have PCOS. My cholesterol is elevated and my hormone levels are high. I don't know how much of a problem this will cause me, even though I've had alot of problems basically my whole life. Was born with one kidney. Anyways, I was just hoping to meet some people with the same issues as me and have someone to talk to about it. I'm scared and confused.
Take Care!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes ladies! Next Thursday is my first appointment with my Reproductive Endocrinologist, and I am really nervous. Whenever I go to a new doctor that no one I know has ever been too I get worried. I have had some pretty bad experiences with doctors. I actually had one doctor tell me (this is quite rude but funny in a way) she told me that the reason I was not having periods was because I was severly overweight and all my hormones were getting trapped in my fat cells and not making it to my ovaries. I tried to explain to her I missed periods even when I was skinny, but she would not listen. When I told her my family had a history of thyroid disease she told me that I was using that as a crutch for being overweight. I would love to take my pelvic ultrasound and my thyroid ultrasound and let her skim over them and see what she has to say now.
What were your first RE appointments like?
Have any of the Mississippi or Louisiana Cysters seen Dr. Bryan Cowan of Jackson, Ms?
