Earlier this year, my OB/GYN noticed that my thyroid was enlarged, ran the labs and said everything was fine. Then, I had yet another primary care doctor try to put me on antibiotics for my chronic cystic acne (been battling it since my late teens... done everything: topical, Accutane, antibiotics, you name it). Thinking there was something up in the thyroid department, I made an appointment with an Endo.
After taking my history and asking a bunch a questions, he said that it sounded as though I had PCOS. I was surprised. I had heard of PCOS but didn't know much about it. And so, the Endo sent me off to the lab for a bazillion tests and I started surfing for information.
Turns out my thyroid is a bit larger than some people's but fine. My glucose tolerance is fine. All my labs were fine with the exception of the FSH and LH ratio which was clearly 2:1. That result, along with my cystic acne, difficulty in losing weight and very long cycles (38+ days) has lead to a diagnosis of PCOS. I should mention that while I have always experienced long cycles, they are ovulatory. I have a five-year-old DS, a two-year-old DS and 30 extra pounds around my middle which can all attest to that. :-)
Anyway, the Endo has prescribed Met XR and I am going to go back on BCPs. The theory being that the anti-androgenic aspect will help my acne. I have also started Weight Watchers. I am a little nervous about the Met but hey... I have nothing to lose but acne and some pounds, right?
Is anyone else being treated for PCOS with some symptoms but not all?
Jools, welcome to SC. There's a great Metformin forum!
I take met 2000mg a day. It's really helped me. I lost weight and started ovulating!!
It also helped regulate my cycles.

Welcome. Glad you found this site. These women are incredilbe and a wealth of information. Sure hope the MET works for you. I currently take 1500 mg a day, and so far so good. The only issue I had was some stomach issues....but my body finally adjusted to it and things are much better. I have to take it in the middle of eating and stay away from certain foods such as salads!!!
Take care and again, welcome. We are glad to have you!!

welcome!
i don't have all the symptoms. only lack of period, a small amount of excess hair on my tummy, strange hormones and ovarian cysts. i have no problems with wieigh, or acne. it depends from person to person. good luck. the girls here are great. don't be affraid to asking ANYTHING. we have all heard it all
I have the long cycles, high male androgens (testosterone) occasionally, and insulin resistence. I ovulated poor quality eggs due to the insulin resistence. Oh yeah, and the extra weight...I'd like to forget about that fact!
There is so much good information on this message board! I've have read so many helpful things. I would check out the Met forum. I started taking it in July. My side effects were minimal and only for a few days. So hang in there. I think it's worth it!

2000mg Met, Synthroid
Hi and welcome to Soul Cysters. All my lab results are fine too except for the LH and FSH. I do have some weight that is hard to get off, some facial hair that I have to constantly get rid of and irregular cycles. My gyn put me on Met before and it made me have perfect 28 day cycles. It really did not do much for my weight though, but I felt great on it and like I said, my cycles came back to normal. I am off the Met now because of a study I am in and I can tell a huge difference. If you need anything let me know.
