Default New Diagnosis

Hi! New here...just received my "official" diagnosis today of PCOS. I've found this message board to be incredibly helpful.

I'd been having VERY irregular cycles since I stopped Nuvaring last April. Before BC I had been pretty regular. LH:FSH=3:1 and my u/s showed many cysts on my ovaries. No other symptoms, though. I'm currently ttc, would you recommend going to a OB/GYN or straight to RE? Thanks!

I'd go straight to RE, but I don't like to waste time. I'm pretty impatient! Good luck to you.

Thanks for your response! I was all set on going straight to RE but when I called my insurance co (DH's plan) today they do not cover ANYTHING for infertility. I was so bummed. Maybe insurance through my work will be better. We'll see. For now I'll try an OB/GYN that I know has experience managing PCOS.

Hi KraneRN,

I would acutally recommend starting with an OBGYN unless you are in a serious time crunch to get pg. As you just found out, depending on insurance seeing an RE can be very expensive. But there are alot of treatment options out there and some are very affordable. For example, research has found that a lot of thin women with PCOS will respond to a medication called metformin. Metformin only costs $4 per month at target. I'm not saying this will be the right treatment for you but it is an inexpensive option that an OBGYN could prescribe. I would find an OBGYN with experience in PCOS and infertility and take it from there. Good luck!!!

Hi MrsP--thanks for your response. I was tested for insulin resistance and it turns out I'm not. So far my only symptoms are irregular cycles and cystic ovaries. Do you know anything about metformin and women who are not IR? I've tried looking at some of the research that Kat has posted, but I can't pull up some of the links. Thanks for your help!

When I thought about going straight to an RE or OBGYN/RE, the REs I called were only interested in seeing me if I was trying to get pregnant, even if they specialized in infertility.

I was pretty livid about that.

Just food for thought.
