Hi all! I'm new and was diagnosed with PCOS last month. I never thought anything was wrong with me since I've always been super healthy and thin. I was on the pill since I was 18, and when I went off of it last year I didn't have a period for 6 months. That prompted me to go to the doctor and I was diagnosed with PCOS.
I have 2 questions for everyone. First, I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a good endocrinologist in the Seattle area. I'm in grad school here, and while the nurse practitioner at the health clinic on campus is super nice, I'd feel more comfortable going to someone with a bit more knowledge/experience.
Second, I wanted to share some test results and ask for opinions. The nurse practitioner doesn't feel that I have anything to worry about in terms of glucose levels/insulin, but my mom is a nurse and is urging me to get a second opinion. Here are my tests results:
I'm concerned about my cholesterol and glucose levels since my dad is pre-diabetic and has high cholesterol and blood pressure. According to the lab, the goal for the total cholesterol is less than 200, and I'm at 194, which, given my family history, concerns me.
Also, the lab says the normal levels for glucose are 62-125, but I've read elsewere that if your levels are from 100-125 you are considered to be prediabetic. Since I'm just barely in the normal range for glucose (98) and given my family history, should I be more concerned? My gynecologist is so dismissive, and I'm just really concerned about my health.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I plan on seeing a specialist, but I would love to hear some comments from people who have gone through this before. Thanks so much! :-)
Glucose really should be taken into consideration alongside insulin. Your glucose might seem high, but the question is really how is your insulin working?
I'm not from the Seattle area so I can't recommend an RE, but you could try the two forums for doctor recommendations here.
Welcome to SC!

I'm lucky to be followed by a great GYN and therefore don't feel the need to see an Endo (even though as a Medical Student I know I probably should be seeing one). My doctor is good about labs, and I have my own Accucheck to check my blood sugars whenever I feel the need to do so.
My fasting glucose was 81 when I went for my bloodwork, my fasting sugars would sometimes vary (being as high as 114!). I also noticed that my blood sugars would often shoot up after eating even if I hadn't consumed a large number of carbohydrates.
My mom (who is also a nurse), spoke to her Endo about PCOS treatment, and she said that she generally prescribes Metformin regardless of whether or not the patient is diabetic or IR.
I would definitely get a second opinion, especially if you aren't comfortable with your first healthcare provider, whatever the reason may be.

From my experience my test results go up and down like a yo yo. I was IR for a couple of years then when I came back to live in Australia they told me my insulin was fine.
My other results that tend to yo yo are my cholesterol, hdl and triglycerides. I'll have a test they'll be hight then a couple of months later I'll have another test and they are in the normal range.
Unfortunately it is all conducent to having PCOS, its just a matter of trying to keep them under control and within normal ranges. Sounds like a simple thing really but like I said I always seem to yo yo with them all.
If your worried get another round of test done and get a second opinion. It can only help with the diagnosis.

Thanks for your responses! I'll find an endocrinologist in this area and see what they say. I'm sure my cholesterol and glucose levels are nothing to worry about, especially since you guys say your levels fluctuate a lot, but better safe than sorry!
Ask for a Fasting Insulin Test test when you get to the Endo.
