Default New Drug for PCOS?

Hey Ladies...

I recieved the following info on my email today and wud like to share it...

1) New Drug for PCOS?

If you're into taking prescription drugs to manage
your PCOS, you'll want to read this.

Have you heard of "naltrexone"? It is a drug used
primarily to treat drug and alcohol addiction. But in
low doses, some clinicians have been using
naltrexone as an "off label" treatment for AIDS,
cancer, autoimmune diseases and central nervous
system disorders.

The first report of using naltrexone for PCOS has
just been released.

Thirty women with PCOS and infertility were
treated with naltrexone for 6 months. In addition
to improved pregnancy rates, naltrexone was
shown to be helpful for wei.ght loss, and reductions
in insulin and testosterone levels. It also improved
LH/follicle-stimulating hormone ratio. All of these
factors are problem areas in PCOS.

Should you take naltrexone?

Here is an older article on this subject --

Article: Heroin addiction drug could help fertility
June 25, 2004 - 4:13PM
http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/...046279813.html

Quote:
Perth woman Jodie Gaywood had been told she could not ovulate because of [b]Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)[b], and had been turned down for adoption.

However, after receiving an implant of naltrexone, Mrs Gaywood is now pregnant.

Obstetrician Dr George O'Neil, who also treats patients for heroin addiction, said he hit on the idea of using naltrexone to treat infertility after seeing more than 50 of his heroin patients become pregnant.
. . . . .
Quote:
It works on the same receptors to help women to ovulate

"When you have a fright or are stressed or you do something that's really pleasurable you release a lot of your own opiates, and we know that people don't get pregnant if they're stressed," Dr O'Neil explained.

"If you block the opiates you can get the part of the brain known as the hypothalamus to start working better, then the pituitary gland starts to work better, and as a result the ovaries start to work better.

"When the ovaries start to work better they go back to releasing eggs normally."

Women with PCOS and those who fail to ovulate could benefit from naltrexone, which Dr O'Neil plans to start formally testing as a fertility treatment.

"There are a large number of people who have PCOS and normally they'd be treated ... with a fertility drug that makes the ovary produce more eggs, or they'd be treated by drilling small holes in the ovary," Dr O'Neil said.

"This approach would potentially be another way of helping them ovulate."

Naltrexone costs about the same amount as existing fertility treatments, and Dr O'Neil is confident it would have no more side effects than other fertility drugs.
. . . . .
Quote:
Although little research has been conducted on the effect of naltrexone on unborn babies, he said he had not seen any adverse outcomes in babies whose mothers took naltrexone for heroin addiction.

"As far as we know, with the 50 or more children we've seen delivered with naltrexone in Perth, they all appear to be doing very well," Dr O'Neil said.

I find this stuff about the opiates fascinating. I wonder if the reason acupuncture works for fertility problems is related to this? I think I read that acupuncture does have some sort of effects on the body's natural opiates.

just a heads up my dad is an alcoholic and has had naltrexone and it gave awful side effects even on the low dose. Also like most drugs as soon as u come off it the old effects come back again this will be the same for PCOS. U wont b able to drink alcohol at ALL as u WILL b violently sick and i mean violently its no joke. So if it becomes a recognised drug for pcos dont just jump into go through it with a fine tooth comb with ur doctor as its not a drug to be messed with !!!!

Default small doses

when you say small doses, currently it comes in doses of 50 mg that is used for alcoholics and herion addicts, for PCOS they are talking 1.5-3mg in fact i have found out that the makers only make it in 50 mg and only certian pharmicies basically crush it down and make it into 1.5mg pills, do you know how much your father was taking, i have been researching this, and i actually have been finding very few side effects with that low of a dose.

I am also back from my online research and it seems that vomiting is more common when alcholics take the medication. But for its off label uses it seems that the side effects are small.

It does have some indication that it can cause Liver damage in high doses. Dont know how it affect babies either.

I have a friend taking LDN. He takes 4.5mg before bed, and aside for some pretty psychadelic dreams, he has had no side effects.
He gets it in a powder form (250mg bottle) and mixes it with water, then drinks 4.5 ml before bed. He has been suggesting it to me for a long time, I've just been waiting for more information to become available in regards to PCOS patients using it! I'm going to start taking it next week....I'll keep you guys posted!

So both of my Doctors offices are treating me like some drug addict. They claimed there is no use of this drug in PCOS patients and asked me to print something out and fax it to them. So these are the websites I used. Just thought I would share them.
