When I was 15 I got diagnosed with PCOS. No one bothered telling me what it was, and I was given a weak birth control pill that didn't help within 6 months. After that everything was dropped. I did not have my periods at all, other than a 3 days bleeding when I was 13.
For years everytime I had to do a certain blood test, I kept hearing "pcos, pcos, pcos" and I still didn't know what it meant. In the meantime I had grown into obesity, I was growing hair ALL over my body other than my lower back, and it was becoming thick and looking like male hair. I had facial hair too, which I took care of with laser treatments when I reached 18.
Around last april I began searching for my problem, thinking I had the were wolf gene (so innocent...) and the hair was caused by that. What I came up with, however, was PCOS wherever I turned. I asked my mother about it and she told me I had it, and claimed to have told me about it more than once.
Now that I was 19 and I knew what was wrong I took myself to an endocrynologst. I had been to several of them over the years and some geno's as well. The most I ever got out of anyone is a prescribtion to the Pill. I even tried alternative medicine and now the result is that I bleed for up to 10 weeks, and there's no pattern that it follows. I can stop for 5 days and bleed again, or not show any signs for 6 weeks and then blled 3, or I can just bleed 5 days.
I had hoped that since this time I took things uner my own control instead of my parents', things would get better. I took a lot of bloodtests and went to my own endocrynologst, who told me not to take the alternative medicine for 8 weeks and then take MORE blood tests.
So I did.
Yesterday I was at her office. She said all I could do was loose weight and excerise, and after 12 weeks of that take MORE bloodtests. Besides that she referred me to a geno.
I'm on the verge of crying. I am 20, hairy, obese, and balding on my head.
I don't want to just blindly start the Pill again since it has proven itself more than once not to help me with anything. I don't want to hear a "there's nothing we can do" everywhere I turn to.
And I just don't know what to do anymore. This is affecting me psychologically and mentally as well as physically.
Shery,
Welcome to SoulCysters. It sounds like you need a big ((((Hug)))
I'm not sure what kind of treatments are avaialbe in Israel. Do you have the results from all of the blood work that has been done? Do you know what they were testing for? Definately get a copy of the test results, then check out the post on understanding lab results.
If you haven't been tested for Insulin Resistance, then definately get that done next time.
Doctors can be insensitive at times. There is nothing motivating about hearing "loose weight and excerise" when they don't tell you how to go about it.
Have you checked out the Diet & Exercise forum? There is a lot of great information, and some groups that you can join for support.
We are here to support you, give you a hug, a shoulder to cry on, and share your successes too!
Do you have the results from all of the blood work that has been done?
- Yes, I've got copies of most blood tests I've done over the past couple of years, the latest one included.
Do you know what they were testing for?
- Hormone levels, trygs, and cholesterol.
Definately get a copy of the test results, then check out the post on understanding lab results.
Thanks for the link, I'll be sure to check it out ASAP.
If you haven't been tested for Insulin Resistance, then definately get that done next time.
- I've been checked for resistance and I'm in healthy range (not evne borderlining). I had to have it tested because diabetes runs in the family.
As for diet and excerise, I've been on Atkins since last march and I stopped sometime around September. I lost 14 kilo's (nearly 40 lbs) and gained back everything but 5 kilo's (around 10-12lbs) because I was pigging out and having cravings and all that.
I started the diet again today, along with exercising.
Glad that you have the test results and that you can check them to the guidelines in that post.
Congrats on the weight loss. just because you gained some of it back, doesn't mean that it won't come off again. I think it is great that you have gotten back on track with the diet & exercise.
