My 14 y/o daughter was recently diagnosed with PCOS and as any mother would do, I'm learning as much as I can.
We're fortunate to have a wonderful gynocologist/endocrinologist (with a great staff) and subsequent to being diagnosed, dd is now on Yasmin to regulate her periods and Klaron for the acne.
I understand insulin resistance also can be a factor and I'm wondering has anyone been successful with certain diets; low carbs or no sugar, white flour etc. My dd did gain a significant amount of weight just after cheerleading season, regardless of what she ate. I cook healthy, I'm not obsessed, but I watch what my family eats.
Prior to the diagnosis, I was so frustrated with her. I had no idea she had this disorder. I thought she had to be eating huge amounts of junk food at school or when with friends. While away at sleep away camp last summer, I gave her grief after she came home because I actually thought she had not washed her face the entire summer! When I learned this was all symptomatic of PCOS, I cried and apologized profusely to her. I cannot begin to tell how guilty I felt, like the worst mother ever.
In any event, I wanted to say hi and learn more. Thanks for this place.
You are a great gift to your daughter because you are here and seeking information! THIS site ALONE has taught me more about PCOS than any doctor ever could. These cysters are smart and helpful and have the biggest hearts around!
I am insulin resistant and was encouraged on this site to read the Insulin Resistance Diet by Cheryle Hart and Mary Kay Grossman. You will learn so much about how her body reacts to food if she is IR. There are also IR threads in the Diet/Exercise area....LOTS of success stories... I am not one yet because I am still overwhelmed with this stupid disease, symdrome...or whatever it is.
So glad to hear you have good doctors! You will see on this site...that good docs are the path to good health...
You are an amazing mother and can give her support she will need for a very long time...

Thanks! I'll go to Amazon for the book. I'm sure to glean much from all here, I'm grateful I found such a comprehensive site!
Thus far at camp, dd's female problems are in check. ::knocks wood:: I hope it stays that way. But I did notice on the health form, the doctor left instructions for her to watch sugar and carb intake. We briefly went over a few things, so now I've got to learn what she really needs to be eating.
I'm not used to this format, I hope this reply finds you.
How does one navigate in here?? Any directions would be beneficial, I'm used to Delphi and this is entirely different.
Any suggestions for bread, I've tried a few and she complains of the taste. She loves bread------white flour. Give her seven grain and she's not hungry.
The other problem I'm concerned about is sugar substitutes, splenda etc. Apparently many teens have horrible acne breakouts from splenda etc. If we can avoid that, it would be best.
It's going to be a balancing act, but we'll get it.
It is great to see you on here for your daughter's sake. I unfortunately did not have that growing up. It wasn't til my mom and sister started have the same problems as me that things started changing.
You can spend hours on here reading information and I would certainly suggest you read it all. IT WILL BE A BIG HELP!
I would just like to say that you are certainly NOT a bad Mother!
Just by being here gathering info on your daughters behalf is enough to tell any of us that you are a wonderful Mom!!
I remember that when I started having symptoms it was the summer that I turned 17.
My parents went on vacation and I stayed with my Aunt and Uncle to be a live in babysitter to my cousins for the summer!
When my parents came back I had gained so much weight that my Mom took one look at me and cryed! She was just that shocked!!
I couldn't convince her that I had not spent the summer being on a total PIGOUT!!
It was very hard for me to not understand what was going on inside my body so I really could not blame my Mom for not believing me!
I was not DX for another 6 years after that and in that time my weight kept climbing because I had no idea about the symptoms that, believe it or not, I have really only learned more about in the past 5 years or so!!
Your daughter is one BLESSED young lady to have a Mom who is looking for the answers to her PCOS problems.
Soak it all in and educate yourself and your daughter so that she can deal with it all with her eyes wide open!!
You will find LOTS of what you need here from answers to encouragement!!
WELCOME!
