I am sixteen and I was recently diagnosed with PCOS. When I was 10 I got my period and had it regularly for three years before it went away (It was a year before my doctor got worried - i wasn't sexually active or anything like that). When I read up on this disease I saw people with very bad symptoms (facil hair, obesity... ECT) I dont have these symptoms. I am slightly overweight but other than that, I am pretty much normal... How common is this? My Gyno says that I am an "unusual case" and I was wondering if I have to worry about getting more symptoms in the future.
Keep in mind: I have been the same weight for years and I have gone through a bunch of pills (progesterone and yasmin being some examples)
Do I have to worry about getting a hairy chin/belly or gaining a ton of weight now that I have this?
Hi sweetie I'm 17 and I was diagnosed a few years ago.
I'm no doctor but I think as long as you lead a healthy life-style (eat low carb, exercise occasionally) and take your meds, new symptoms shouldnt pop up. And if you do notice a stray hair or an increase in your weight, talk to your doctor and he/she can adjust your meds or whatever. The point is, you can control it.
And I dont understand why your gyno said you were an unusual case. My best friend went to a dermatologist cause she had acne and a week later she learned she had PCOS. She doesnt have any other symptoms. So if a dermatologist could guess that my friend had PCOS just from acne, I'm sure she has seen it before. So don't worry, you're not alone.
Good luck, and pm me if you need to talk!

I remember when I was 16 and started having signs of PCOS- I didn't know what PCOS was back then and apparently neither did my Dr's- because all they did was put me on BCP's and sent me on my merry way- which did nothing for my other symptoms. If I had known then what I know now I feel I could have prevented the 120 lbs weight gain, the hair, the skin tags, the dark patches, etc- but I didn't- but YOU do- and I am so glad you are lucky enough to find out NOW while you're young so you can get it under control before you end up like many of us- lost and confused and obese and wondering WHY our Dr's didn't catch it sooner.
Good luck sweetie! Keep a healthy lifestyle and you'll do SO much better!
