Well, here I am. My name is Amy, I'm 22 and today I got my prescription for Metformin. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 16, but I've done a good job of hiding from it, ignoring it and generally being bad since then. I've let my weight shoot up, I stopped seeing my gynae consultant, I stopped taking meds... You name it, I did it. I didn't want my boyfriend to think of me as his PCOS girl. Stupid, huh?
So, today when I saw my GP I finally bit the bullet and asked him to recommened me something, anything, that may help me. He weighed me, talked to me for ages, then pulled out his prescription pad and wrote me a prescription for Metformin. I had been prescribed it back in 2003, but I stopped taking it after it made me ill.
I'm terrified that I won't have the willpower to stick to taking the Metformin, avoiding alcohol and all the simple sugars and carbohydrates and fats that have made me balloon in weight. I suppose thats where this forum comes in... you know what I'm going through. You've been there before, or your there now.
I'm so glad I found this site. Now, I'm going to go to the chemists and get my tablets.
Amy x

I just wanted to pick up on something you said about Metformin making you ill. I also was very ill with Metformin, I had a break from it for a couple of years and then my new doctor suggested that I take the combination drug Avandamet (combination of metformin and Avandia). I was reluctant at first but then agreed to give it a try. I have been taking it since April and I have had no side effects. You might want to consider it if you have further problems.
Just wanted to welcome you to the site.. Noticed you were new
have a great night

Yes Deeds2, I was here ages ago! I lived in Edinburgh back then, had been seeing Dr Tay from the hospital...
Anyway, since then I moved to Glasgow and stopped bothering with trying to keep all these symptoms at bay. It's only now that I've started pulling myself together and started taking Metformin again. Been taking it for three days now, not quite sure what I'm feeling, or if I should be feeling anything. Still, I'm glad I'm back, and glad I'm taking it.
