Hello! I am new to the group and hoping to get advise from the more seasoned members. I have been married for about 1 year and went off my birth control pills in May. To make my long story short...I went to the GYN 2 weeks ago because I was having irregular periods ever since stopping my birth control & had not had one in over 100 days. She ran some blood test and I got a card in the mail on Saturday stating that I have a tendency toward PSOD. My LH:FSH was 2:1. Will probably need medication for ovulation when I decide to try for pregnancy. Continue current treatment (Prometrium every 3 months).
Needless to say I have been trying to get all the information I can find. I do remember back when I was 12 being told I had ovarian cysts and was put on birth control pills. My husband & I had wanted to wait a year or so before trying since I do not have a permanent job or permanent health insurance yet (until August 2006). With this news I am wondering if trying right now would be the smartest option.
So my questions are:
1. Where can I get more information?
2. What does a tendency toward PSOD mean? Not diagnosed yet?
3. Should I start trying to get pregnant now?
There is a board specifically about trying to conceive. Those women have polycystic ovaries or PCOS or both. Having the cysts doesn't mean you automatically have PCOS and not all women with PCOS have cysts on their ovaries. Check out these links:
Mommy Board: http://www.soulcysters.net/forumdisplay.php?f=67
Feel free to ask questions about TTC on the Mommy board, since they are often happy to share their experiences and advice on TTC and pregnancy.
The Pregnancy Loss board is a good place to find out what tests need to be done before and when you get pregnant to give you a better chance of carrying to term: http://www.soulcysters.net/forumdisplay.php?f=46
If you are posting about TTC or babies on the Loss Board, please post "TTC/baby mentioned" in the title of your post in sensitivity to those dealing with a loss.
These board will give you tips on getting pregnant and carrying to term. Most stress the need of a good doc who knows a lot about PCOD/PCOS and will test you for diabetes, insulin resistance, etc. When I was TTC I gave up OTC meds. and caffeine and was already on a modified lower carb diet. Some ladies go on Metformin to get pregnant, others have to have other meds or proceedures. Some have success with weight loss, though there are many of us who were Fluffy when we got pregnant. I was watched closely for diabetes when I was pregnant, but never developed it. I have insulin resistance (IR) and I'm on Met. for it.
Here is a thread on the Five Types of PCOS. That might help you see if you have PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome) or only PCO (polycystic ovaries). 5 Types of PCOS

Welcome to SC, Suzi! Jashobeam did a great job of answering your questions, so I won't add to much to that. There is a lot of helpful information here on meds and ttc, so look around and feel free to ask any questions!

So my questions are:
1. Where can I get more information?
This site is GREAT. IT has a TON of info and women who have BTDT!!
2. What does a tendency toward PSOD mean? Not diagnosed yet?
I don't know what that means but I would say you have PCO. You need to fine a good doctor that is knowlegable about PCOS. A Reproductive endocrinologist is your best bet!
3. Should I start trying to get pregnant now?
You could. That's up to you.
