It is great to find this board! I was recently diagnosed on Friday, January 27th. Since then I have done a TON of research on this and am finding that perhaps I have a mild case, if that is possible?
I've always been irregular since I first started menstruating. I could go 3 months without a period, but that was when I was participating in over 6 hours of exercise a day. After high school I got more on a regular schedule with menstruating about every 5-6 weeks. I could go longer without one though if I was particularly stressed out.
What brought on this diagnosis is that I have had one heck of a stressful holiday at work and planning a wedding! This is the most stressed out I've ever been in my life. I figured that was why I hadn't had my period since November 27th but once I had severe cramping, bloating and spotting (passed one big blood clot) with no REAL period, I went to the Dr.
The Dr. did a blood test to see if I was prego (which an EPT test 2 weeks before told me I wasn't) and a hormone test to see if my levels were out of wack. I also have an Ultrasound as well.
The ultrasound tech told me that everything in my system looked normal. I went for a follow up and the Dr. told me there was a SLIGHT hormonal imbalance. He didn't go into detail with that though. Then he said he talked with the tech and made a preliminary diagnosis (without the official results back yet) and told me I had PCOS.
He gave me a progesterone to bring on my full period and I'm on my 2nd day with that so far. So far, no bleeding. Does anyone know how long it takes for the bleeding to start? I'm taking 2 pills (400 mg total) before I go to bed for 10 days. I have 3 refills on it and if I don't start menstruating on a semi-regular cycle again I have to take the pills again after 3 months.
I've never had heavy uncontrollable bleeding with any of my periods. My periods have always lasted 3 days, 4 at the most with an average amount of blood loss. I do have ONE lone dark hair that grows in on my chin though and a peach fuzz (barely noticible) around my upper lip. On both sides of my breasts, one lone thick hair grows in there.
Other than this one episode, I've never had any symptoms and a few years ago even lost 52 pounds within a 7 to 8 month period. I've since gained it back but that was due to my own uncontrollable eating. I've lost 6 pounds since January 1st by just monitoring my caloric intake and exercising 3 times a week.
Does it sound like I have a typical case? Considering no glucose test has ever been done on me I find it hard to believe they can diagnose me on such few tests. I've also always tended to be HYPO-glycemic where my sugar is relatively low. I cannot go more than 4 or 5 hours without eating or I get dizzy and start to shake a little.
Thanks for reading my long post! I just wanted to give my history. Have any of you easily conceived after a diagnosis? I have no kids to date but would like some after I get married in about two years. Thanks for any help!!

Leikela,
Welcome to SC!
I've never taken progesterone to bring on AF so I'm not much help there!
I think if there's one thing typical about PCOS, there's no such thing as a typical case of PCOS! I have some of the major PCOS symptoms, and some I don't. I had heavy irregular periods, excess weight around the belly, thinning hair, depression, AN. I did not have excess hair, skin tags, etc. My bloodwork was fine when I was diagnosed but my dr. believed I had PCOS and started me on met even before I went for an ultrasound. (The US did show that I have polycystic ovaries). I take met, prozac and bcp, all of which I think are helpful to me. I also used to tend toward hypoglycemia before my diagnosis. (I have since been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes but it is well controlled).
About conceiving: I had my first 2 children 15 months apart, without really ttc. After my 2nd son was born my PCOS symptoms really kicked in but it was another 3 years before I was diagnosed. We ttc our daughter for over 2 years, but most of that time was when I was suffering with the PCOS and didn't even know I had it! In my case, it was only a year after my diagnosis (and met) that I conceived. I am very thankful for this since I know many cysters try hard and long to conceive. But it can happen quickly too, so don't give up hope for that!
Good luck to you
Jenny

Thanks Jenny for the welcome and for your response. That's good to know that not everyone has the same symptoms. It definitely seems as if I have some of the milder symptoms. Also, congrats on having 3 children. That is great! I hope to have 2 healthy babies of my own one day. Thanks again!
