Hello. I am so greatful to find this site. I just recently had a hysterectomy in March, everythings gone, however, I still have pcos problems. I was wondering, is it normal to gain as much as 10 lbs in 4 days with this? I had lost 80 lbs since i had my 2nd child two years ago, and then all of a sudden, I just started breathing the weight on. It was literally 10 lbs in 4 days, and then inched its way up since then. That was in September of 06. Well, I was vaccuming one evening, felt like I pulled something, but the pain got worse and wouldn't ease off, went to the ER, found out 4 days later in exploratory surgery that I had two ovaries full of cysts inside and out. So, guess what, they took em'. Well, the doc said that this is why I was gaining weight and unable to lose it. I am brand new at taking metformin, and I stopped taking XR because it made my throat feel like it was closing up, so I waited a couple of weeks and started the one in the morning and evening, it's not XR. It's a total of 1000 mg a day. I have a few questions:
1. Is this a permanent medication for a lifetime?
2. Do you and can you really start to lose weight again taking this?
3. Do the side effects ever wear off?
I know this is a lot, but I have been searching for help for weeks and have had no one to talk to. I feel so empty and hopeless, and anymore, I've almost given up on exercise because all I do is gain. Do you think I have found relief? Oh and one other question, has anyone had a full hysterectomy and takes metformin/hormone replacement therapy? I was wondering if I stopped taking my hrt completely if that would help with weight loss as well. My doctor said it would be ok, but if I had any problems, he would have to put me back on the hormones. Right now the only thing I'm taking is metformin and a diuretic for swelling issues. Thank you in advance for listening, I really appreciate it....
welcome tosc yes ive put on lots of weight within a day...... mine was due to wheat/dairy intollerances so ive sinced found out ALWAYS eat with met.

1. Is this a permanent medication for a lifetime? there are many differing opinions on this. some say yes, some say no. Some say once you get it under control with diet and exercise you can discontinue Met. Some say that's inncorrect that the second you discontinue you'll head straight back down that awful gaining road. For me personally i hope to NEVER EVER give up my met.
2. Do you and can you really start to lose weight again taking this?well let's see i've lost 44 pounds in 3 months so that would be a yes~!
3. Do the side effects ever wear off? absolutely. And for me they weren't really even unbearable...some diarreaha and nausea...nothing you can't live through. And it DOES go away. I don't even notice it anymore.
good luck. I can't say enough good things about metformin. and welcome to SC.

Thank you so much for your response. Any help is nice. I felt so alone until I found this site. I feel better to have found someone who can relate to what I am feeling and going through.
Thank you!!!! And congrats on your weight loss! That is terrific. I exercise at least 6 days a week, and got to where I was almost eating like a rabbit, yet I still was not losing weight. I am so excited to have hopefully found some help. Both through met and everyone here at this site! I hope I don't become annoying and asking a whole bunch of ridiculous questions.. Thank you so very very much. I guess time will tell if I will be on it permanently. Oh, btw, did you ever have a funny taste in your mouth when you first started taking met? Mine tastes like I have a metalic or copper like taste. Very strange, but you take the good with the bad, right? Hugs to you!
