Red face New Here

Hey everyone, I had never been to a doctor for any of my symptoms. I had not had a normal period since Feb. of 2002 and i was informed by my brother when i was 16 that i had a "beard" i had not realized it myself. I have always been shy, or easily embarassed so i told no one, not even my mom. I just tried to take care of the facial hair on my own and didn't worry about my period, i sure didn't miss it, and i was a virgin so i knew i wasn't pregnant. But i want to go on birth control and find out what was wrong with me, so i went to a doctor and had my first annual exam, and she said all my syptoms suggested i had PCOS. I had never heard of it. She put me on bcp and sent me on my way. So now what. I want to get laser treatment for my hair problem, but at my consultation she said i need to be on medication or it might not work as well. Can anyone tell me what you do for hair issues. Thanx, Leah.

Before being dx with PCOS I was put on Spironolactone for the facial hair (hate it). The facial hair (and other places) comes from your testosterone (sp) levels. You need to have this checked also due to seeing if your are up. My levels were like a man's. Good luck with everything. You need to get on Metformin for the PCOS (this is what My Gyn rx for me).

Lol

Smile Welcome!

I agree with the previous poster that there is more to getting PCOS in check than just regulating your period. You need to get a doc who is familure with PCOS and who can test you for Insulin Resistance, Diabetes and your hormone levels. Some do an ultra sound of ovaries to see if you have cysts (not all women with PCOS acutally have the cysts). My lower-carb diet has helped slow my unwanted hair, and I think it has put my hormones more under control. You might want to look at the BCP board to see what other women are on.

Also, we are more at risk for high blood pressure and high cholesterol, so you might want to keep an eye on that.
