New Here. This was also posted in the Hair in the Wrong Places thread.
Hi,
My name is Sarah, I'm 23, and have been loosely diagnosed with PCOS, but my doctor is not completely convinced that this is what I have, as I don't fit the exact profile of PCOS. Please forgive this long post. I am depressed, confused, and am hoping someone can relate to my story.
I was borderline anorexic (due to post-traumatic stress) for over two years. I am 5'4" and weighed between 90 - 95 pounds for the whole time, and have finally gotten to around 105. I missed my periods due to being underweight, but before my disordered eating my periods were fairly irregular. My hormone tests all came back within normal ranges, although my DHEA was elevated (apparently over 400, which my dr. said was high). My ultrasound revealed "abnormal follicles" (but no cysts). My dr said that perhaps my history of being so underweight and having a mild eating disorder may be causing these PCOS-like symptoms. Do any of you ladies have a history of eating disorders that may have mimicked PCOS symptoms, or may have CAUSED it?
In the past several months I have gained 10 pounds (I am assuming this is just because I've been eating more thatn I used to), and have noticed an increased in peach fuzz on my face, as well as a fairly quickly progressing appearance of darker, longer, more noticeable hairs on my chin and around my mouth. I am so unbelieveably distressed by this. I have felt so ugly and negative about my body for so long, and now when I have finally pretty much recovered from my eating disorder this hair is beginning, and gives me a whole new reason to feel ugly and unfeminine. I cry every day.
I just started Spironolactone (50 mg 2x per day), andd Yasmin. I am hoping to GOD that this helps with this hair growth. My testosterone levels were normal though - does this mean that the Spiro won't help me? My DHEA was elevated, so I'm assuming this may be what contributed to the hair growth. Also, now that I am on the Spiro and Yasmin, will this at least prevent NEW hairs from growing? If I have to deal with the ones I already have, I can find a way to do that. But the idea that I will continue to grow NEW hairs makes me want to just die.
Welcome to Soul Cysters. I'm sorry I don't know the answers to your questions but I'm sure someone here may be able to shed some light on it for you, if not we are all here to support you. x

Difficult to say. Hopefully you'll find something that will slow down the hair growth, but nothing *certain*, even with today's medicine.
I have been loosely diagosed with PCOS for a little over a year, although my symptoms are consistent with it. As far as unwanted hair is concerned, it sucks. We are constantly surrounded by images of thin, clear skinned, hairless women and this disorder seems the antithesis to that.
Right now, I suggest on using over-the-counter products to "hide" your hair growth. You'll feel much better about yourself. Personally, I bleach the hair on my upper lip and chin (not too much) and pluck any strays (I always keep a pair of tweesers handy). For my stomach, I wax it and then pluck strays in between. Do it suck sometimes?? Absolutely. I can't tell you how many times I've wished that I didn't have to deal with this, but life doesn't deal us a fair deck.
Remember, a lot of women (with and WITHOUT) PCOS use wax and cream bleach- so many women are uncomfortable with their body hair. Is someone going to freak out because you have one stray hair on your chin. Probably not. If it bothers you, grab your tweezers and pluck it out.
My doc also put me on birth control to help with the hair although, I'm not going to solely rely on it. I'm so sorry to hear about your eating disorder. I too am recovering from one. I hope this helps!
Hi, I went off BCP in May, and since then lots of hair! So comforting to hear someone else getting depressed by it. I feel the same. I have hair everywhere & so wear trousers all the time. I noticed it increase in eyebrows, nipples, moustache, beard, legs, stomach, underarms & today woo-hoo, on my throat. I use nair, or for legs shaving, but its an everyday thing & its minor in the grandscale of life, buts its soooo frustrating. Be good to hear feedback from others...
