New Here, but not to PCOS, but so confused Hi,
My name is Heidi and I have dealt with PCOS since I was diagnosed at age 19, nineteen years ago. We have come a long way since then with treatment.
I have to say that I may have been a lucky being diagnosed so young, have spent the majority of my adult life on BCP's with the exception of trying to concieve/pregnancy/bfdg. Two children conceived with Clomid, one m/c with Clomid and an oops on Met.
I was put on Met back in 2000 with an Insulin of 17. Worked well with AF regulation, but I stopped it due to GI issues. Six weeks later, I was pregnant with #3.
Fast forward to fall 2002, went on Yasmin when DD3 weaned. I had been on it almost exclusively until December.
In Dec. I had bloodwork done, Fasting Insulin was 11 and fasting glucose was 1 point above normal. I messed up on the pills that month and stopped them. It took 7 weeks for AF to come on her own, and during that time, I gained 10-13 pounds with absolutely no change in my eating habits (already overweight, but not horrendously so). I also realized that I actually had a sex drive off of Yasmin.
So I consulted with my Gyne and she put me on Alese. I have/had been on that for 2 cycles and all sex drive went byebye and i have been getting some acne. (DH had a vasectomy so pregnacy prevention hasn't been the reason why I had continued on BCPs).
SO, I spoke with my gyne again and we decided to try going back to Met again. We also started talking about Byetta, and she has contacted a specialist at UConn, they are looking into the off label use of Byetta. So in the meantime, we decide to do a 2hr GTT, fasting insulin and HbA1C.
That is where we are now, and I am so confused by the results. My fasting was 104, my 30 min was 127, my 1hr was 117 (low) and my 2hr was normal range (can't remember #). My HbA1C was 6.6 and my fasting insulin was 9. So essentially this was a normal GTT, but my HbA1c was elevated (not horrible, but for a non diabetic, it is high). What I am doing that has made my insulin continue to lower?
So do I go back on Met, regardless of the results and hope that with a low carb diet I will lose weight? I know that I need to go back on a low carb diet again and start walking (lost 17 pounds back in 2004, but had to go carbless to start the wt loss, gained it back over 12mos, plus the additional pounds from Dec/Jan.)
Feedback would be great, and if anyone can recommend a endo in CT that specializes in PCOS that would be great too.
