Default New here can you please answer this?

Hi there - my Dr. says I have polycystic ovaries but not PCOS (not sure how that works) but he put me on 500mg of Metformin once a day. Had a scan at CD14 today and my lining is 3.46mm and my largest follicle is only 6.5mm.... Can someone tell me will the Metformin help my follicles grow? I really don't understand what it is for....

Thanks so much.

I'm new here myself, diagnosed just two months ago. I can tell you that metformin is an insulin sensitizer, which is supposed to help your body utilize insulin more efficiently. It doesn't directly help with your ovulation, but excess insulin can mess with your normal hormone levels, which in turn can interfere with normal follicle development. It's all very inter-dependent, and you should probably read some of the information on this web site. I found a lot of the other threads helpful, as well as the articles and books referenced.

I don't understand why your doctor says you don't have PCOS. You will find many other threads where people struggle with issues with the doctors. The more you know, the more questions you can ask your doctor.

I was actually told the same thing following an ultrasound, and based on list of symptoms I took to a doctor later - NOT knowing about history of u/s or polycystic ovaries, she dx'd PCOS immediately. Several docs I've seen say 500 and 1000mg Met don't typically work often enough, so higher doses like 1500 and 2000 are typically the goal, but again nothing is the same for every woman so 500 could fix you right up! I'd have no idea when to expect seeing results though, as I can't say Met at any dose has ever worked for me.

Thank you ladies. I guess my doctor said I don't have PCOS because I don't have any symptoms of PCOS. Periods have been regular 28 days since age 13. I feel myself ovulate - only had one annov cycle in the past 18 months. I have two children conceived on the first try and I'm underweight and always have been.... only thing is my ovaries have "numerous peripheral follicles", whatever that means. But my doctor insists I need Metformin without having done any bloodwork. He says it will help with insulin resistance but I've never been tested to see if I am...

Sought a second opinion from a different Dr. who said he didn't think I had PCOS at all, that my ovaries had alot of follicles but it wasn't unusual, and that I should stop taking the Metformin because I don't need it...

That was all well and good until he told me how small my follicles were. We're ttc and I am now wondering if my first doc was right about taking the Metformin because my follicles have never been that small at CD14. I hope this makes some sense... basically I'll take the Met if it will help my follicles grow, but if not then I don't see the point...

i was under the impression that PCOS does not automatically mean you have cysts. I thought the medical community was looking at changing the name since it is misleading. My doctor diagnosed me with PCOS because my ratio of FSH:LH was 3:1, I am anovulatory, and I have acne and weight gain. I believe she said if 3 symptoms are met, with the most evident being the hormone ratio and the lack of ovulation, you can be diagnosed with PCOS.
I've never had an ultrasound on my ovaries to determine if there are cysts.
Another side note...I also thought I could feel myself ovulating, so when I wouldn't get my periods I was confused. The pain you feel mid cycle, while it is in your ovaries, does not mean you are ovulating. You'd want to chart your BBT to determine if you are, although if you are getting regular periods you most likely are. Hope this helps?
