Hi Christina,
I too have been having troubles in the last 9 months and have been frustrated with doctors. It's like you're losing your mind with symptoms and the doctors not knowing (or seeming to care) compunds your distress. It's tough not feeling like yourself and then having to "complain" to doctors and pester them to be tested.
I first saw my family doc for constant migraines, 3 missed AF, sudden weight gain around the middle, constant hunger, depression, poor sleeping, fatigue, hair (gained and lost) and lost sexual interest. These all seem like classic signs of PCOS to me?? Well he ran a battery of tests, ruled out thyroid problems and pituitary tumor with an MRI and then sent me away with only a 60 day prescription for Topamax. (which helps with the sleep, hunger, gain weight easily, depression, fatigue and migraines) I felt like he thought I was a nut that I just wanted attention!! I was so grateful for the prescription once I knew it worked but this is only for 60 days. Anyway so I go see my gyno - she says wait and come back for my yearly - we'll talk more. OKAY????What's that about?? So I try to make an apointment with her, since she is booked solid, I see an associate sooner who does my yearly exam. While talking about what's been happening I also mention the crazy moodiness I had, she shrugs off all other symptoms and nicely suggests that I see a shrink!!! Thanks, I understand most people can't be harmed by seing one, but it would be nice to find out why suddenly I'm feeling like a nut and having health issues besides! Anyways, there is a silver lining, she offered a ultrasound to appease me. The tech didn't find any cysts but did mention that I sounded like a classic PCOS! She promptly talked to the doc who ordered the US and she authorized some blood tests. I am waiting on a diagnosis, but it explains a lot. I am extremly lucky to have 3 beautiful girls but it did take me 10 months to concieve the first time. It explains the Gestational Diabetes and the Pregnancy Induced Hypertension and the rising blood pressure now.
On my own, I have started Atkins and have lost 5 pounds on the Induction phase so far this week! I feel great and Dr. Atkins was a genious =) !!! |
