Hi, I am new here. I was just diagnosed today with pcos. I am not sure what to think or how this will effect me from now on. There are alot of things that I dont understand about my situation. For instance, my doctor put me on metformin, for the pcos. and I was also put on synthroid for hypothyroidism. I didnt even know I had pcos much less hypothyroidism. and I also have an issue with insulin resistance, another thing that I dont know much about. My doctor told me that haveing more kids is probably not a good idea. I had many complications when I was pregnent with my son. I know now that the reason was my pcos. I didnt want any more kids, but now that I have been told that I shouldnt have anymore, I kindof feel trapped. I think I just need some support from people who have the same problem as I do.. I hope I have found the righ place for this.
I am scared and confused right now. Is this a seriouse condition? My docotor didnt make it sound so bad.. Is there anyone who can give me some more info?
thanks a bunch
april
welcome to sc. I know how scary it alla is at first. That's why I found this site soooo good. I've learnt lots and made lots of friends. Have you had a chance to look at the nebie section yet? There's loads of good info in there.

I was on metformin last year when I was diagnosed and now I'm on actos and glucophage. I'm so new at this to, after I was diagnosed I had my 'first' period /still don't know much about that either/ and I'm about to turn 19.
I'll help support if you need anything. I still haven't found a thread yet either lol.
I know how overwhelming it is at first, but it gets easier... I have learned a lot on this site, i hope it helps you too. If you have any questions PM me, i will do my best to help ya =) Just remember you are not alone!

I'm not sure why your doctor recommended you not have anymore children. That doesn't sound right to me, but I don't know if there are reasons outside of PCOS. I have Incompetent Cervix and have had many pregnancy complications like bleeding and m/c. My doctor told me to come back when I was ready to have another baby.
There are tons of resources available here. I'm sure you can find answers to your questions. There is a board just about metformin here. Be sure and check it out. There is also a board for thyroid problems. Also be sure to check out the research articles section - http://www.soulcysters.net/forumdisplay.php?f=45
Welcome April! The Metformin can both help the insulin resistance and the PCOS..I LOVE the way my DR explained it to me...he said for PCOS, there was a broken link in ovulation cycle and that Metformin is suppossed to bridge that broken link. Your Dr may have recommended that you don't have any other children because of the complications u had..I'm guessing..but I would recommend getting a second opinion...you're not insulting your Dr..it's just...they think they are right all the time..and sometimes...they just give thier best educated guess because they don't know. Hope we can help you here!
